I have a 90 348TS at the Ferrari Dealer getting it's 30K service. The called me today and said that the possi isn't working although the car drives nice. Is this a normal problem? If it's common is there a average cost to fix it? I want to make sure they don't bend me over ;). I have a Ferrari mechanic friend who will have some time after the first of the year to work on any of the stuff that the dealer didn't do. i.e. non urgent items. Is this a show stopper where the car should not be driven until it's fixed?

    Thanks
    Rick

    The WHAT isn't working?

    What's a possi? I don't believe that is a word.

I'd like to help, but you must clarify.

Rick -- Not a 348er myself, but that "problem" (if it truly is just that the posi-traction clutches are worn out and slipping, but everything else in the differential/gearbox is OK) has not been widely reported here. To replace/rebuild the posi-traction components I believe requires removing the differential assembly from the gearbox so it's not a minor repair. IME, the general rule of thumb is that with labor intensive components (like gearboxes/diffs) it really doesn't make sense to do a fix until a real serious operational problem exists.

If "possi isn't working" is taken literally (and normal driving is OK), the only symptom would be that you'd do 1-wheel burnouts instead of 2-wheel burnouts (but it could just be that the service writer is just not communicating well) -- did they explain how they determined "the possi isn't working"?

PS Please add your F year/model/version and at least your location by continent to your Profile.

Thanks for the info. I visited with them today and they also agreed that that car was safe to drive. I asked about rebuilding the diff and they didn't know if the parts were available, so they quoted me the price of a new diff. They are going to look into whether the clutch packs can be purchased.

The service manager said they spun the wheels on the lift and saw that the posi was not working.
