New FChat member "Xander" sent me some scans from Dutch magazines showing spy pictures of pre-production prototypes of the 348. This picture is from a November 1988 magazine, and shows some interesting lines without the cheese-graters.

Wow... look at the GTO-like sleeves at the rear.

I also like the doors better, but in general the rear is to square.
But hey, they figured that out themselves.

Nice shot though, never saw it before.

More Testarossa rear line. Nice except BMW wheels.

I think (I'm sure I will be corrected if wrong) the cheese graters were added because of some regulation about certain max air intake size.

Looks like the black parts were dummies to fool the public or they actually painted them later. If you remove the door's black part, it'll like look a little like a "LM version" used in some Challenge racecars or 355. Interesting pics.

Wow! I'm glad they didn't make that version. It looks like a kit car to me. I prefer the production model 110%.

Yikes!! That looks tragic. In fact, I changed a baby diaper this morning that smelled nicer and looked cleaner than that poop-mobile shown above!

On the other hand, I'll bet they already knew what the final design would look like, and simply threw some cladding on the basic body so they could get some powertrain testing underway. Look carefully and the greenhouse -- it's identical to what we have in our cars today. Same windshield & mirrors, same sexy B-pillar and intake under the rear sail. Even the hood looks correct (minus of course that GM-style front bumper)

    Cool picture!

Yes, everything except the black add on pieces appear to be part of the final design. Funny how the addition of some plastic parts can make a car look totally different. Nice catch!

Mind you , I hate it as well, but Im sure if that protype went on sale at some auction in the future it would fetch a pretty penny. 20 years from now those one off's will be worth a mint. The Enzo prototype was partly a blown out 348 in design and sold at the Ferrari auction in late 2005 it went for $400,ooo US. Ive attached a pic, sorry its small and not of great quality.
