When I do a cold start on my 1990 348ts it idles rough - stays below 1000 rpms - and seems to cough for maybe 5 seconds then the rpms move up. Smoke also comes out the exhaust. After that it is fine. Is this normal? Anyone have any experience with this?

If I run the car then shut it off again it will start up perfectly with no smoke and sounds great.

    Maybe I am paranoid.

After the car has sat all night, disconnect the battery for :15 - :30 seconds then reconnect it. Make sure the car is in neutral. Now start the car and let is idle for 15 - 20 minutes, or until the cooling fans come on at least once. When the car is warming up DO NOT touch anything. Let it idle by itself. Again DO NOT touch anything, not the throttle, not the breaks, not the clutch. The ecu needs to relearn the warm up process. After it has gone through the relearning process you should be good to go.

That's pretty common and probably correct. If not, try adjusting your a/f mixtures by slightly turning the screws under your blue caps on your MAFs (next to your air filter).
