Well, here is my thread on my clutch bearing and clutch. I was driving for a little over an hour when I had an issues when pressing the clutch, it was not empty but not as strong but did spring back. The issue was the clutch was not releasing and an awful squeaking sound on idle and crazy loud when pressing the clutch. Before I start, I have to say thank you to a few people, Ernie whose thread on Clutch Removal is simply amazing as well as vvassallo’s. Mike (AceMaster) who spoke to me for almost an hour on the phone LD for help, advice and confirmation on a special contact (originally from Ernie). We spoke like we knew each other for years.….thanks Mike. Last but certainly not least….Daniel at RICAMBI…..damn….this guy is AWESOME!!!!! Thanks for all your help Daniel.... So I jack the car, remove the rear tires and inner covers. Then I remove the 2 bolts on each end and the two on each side right under the brake lights. Jiggle the bumper with my wife who is in shock that I’m taking a Ferrari apart and place the bumper on two lawn chair cushions. I removed the Stebro Exhaust, remove the bottom plate under the clutch housing, then pry apart the housing and then I reverse it to expose low pressure plate fingers. I touch them and they fingers break with absolutely no pressure. Crap…..then I remember AceMaster’s post about a contact name for Friction Materials in Long Beach CA who made a plate for him and Ernie. So I give them a call and the guy there said yeah, sure no problem, send me your plate and give me about 3-4 days to do it. So shipping there and back and a few days there, I can have it in a little over a week. ~ Mario Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
So I call up Ricambi and make an order with Daniel over the phone. I ask some dumb questions and he helps me out like a long lost friends. Excellent service and awesome positive attitude…..So after speaking with Daniel, I remove the bearing and as I pull it out, about 2 ounces of fluid shoots out all over the floor. I remove the flange and then she starts leaking at a pretty stable flow (I have a container now under there)…..at this point I am kind of freaking out because I smell it and its gear oil… (I don’t remember reading that in the step by step process). Now I don’t know if I missed reading it or if it’s expected but at this point, I am thinking SOMETHING IS WRONG…..WTF do I do?!?!?!? I pick up the phone and call Daniel, in a relaxed, not worried voice he replies, yeah…..it does that, it’s normal, don’t worry it will stop and continues to calm me down by asking flange questions. So tomorrow I am mailing the pressure plate out. The first picture, the grease is about 2-3-4mm all over.....You can see where I rubbed it with my finger......that doesn't look too good....I know I need to Kluber that thing back into shape....... I have been working on this for 2 days and its pretty cool to be able to do this without a 2 post lift. ~ Mario Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
ATA BOY Mario! I love it! Folks we have us new Stooge. I'm glad my post was able to help you out. I'm also glad to see you posting up a how-to, because it will help out and encourage the next brother to tackle the job. I'm looking forward to seeing it all fixed and ready to go. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Ernie.... Cant wait to get her all back together, only one problem I forgot to post.....the allen bolt nuts that hold the presure plate, I stripped 2 of them (I HATE ALLEN BOLTS). Not sure where I will get new ones...... ~ Mario
They shouldn't be that hard to source. Believe it or not, I have had pretty good luck finding bolts at Lowe's hardware store. However, I would take one of the bolts with you to a nut & bolt store, and have them match it.
You do need to be careful when it comes to finding replacement bolts. You have to make sure they are of the proper hardness when they are in critical locations. Most hardware at Lowes and Home Depot are usually the lower hardnesses.
Lowe's has a section in the bolts isle that is specifically automotive. O'Reilly Auto parts also sells nuts and bolts. But I get your point. The easiest is to just take the bolt to a shop that specializes in them.
Hey Ernie, I was just mainly wanting him to know that there are different hardnesses in bolts so make sure to match them up. You are correct that some Lowes do offer the better grade stuff. You just have to look for it. If someone does not know about the different grades of bolts, bad things could happen.
Nice work mate. Mine broke some pressure plate fingers also many years ago. EASY to find those replacement bolts. If you get stuck, tell me the size you need and I will send some out to you. But it will be 100% quicker to source them in the USA than have me send them from here. Thanks for the pics and enjoy, working on these cars is a lot of fun.
Excellent work, Mario, it was a pleasure speaking with you too....and it is my pleasure to assist wherever I can, I am just doing my part as several people have assisted me in the past
I know about different grades for bolts and that the regular hardware stores usually don’t have them. My concern was weight. If I can’t find an exact replacement, 2 out of 9 bolts will end up being different weights so this could affect balancing right? Why couldn’t they have used regular hex bolts….. I hope I find some replacements and thinking maybe I should replace all of them to hex?!?! Thoughts? Now I have a question for anyone who’s replaced a clutch on their 348. On the top of it, it says “AP Racing England” and has 2 numbers on it. Were these clutches Ferrari replacements when you order a new one from Ferrari or was mine changed to one from this company? http://www.apracing.com/ **Edit** Did not find 348 but did find Mondial T in their listing and it says... CP3318-2GRY is not available from AP Racing. Contact Maranello Concessionaries Ltd, So I guess they made them for Ferrari as OEM. Anyways, I didn't need a replacement clutch.....was just asking since it was there on the cover... ~ Mario
I thought it might be .BTW thanks again Daniel . I also looked for a 60mm socket to customize to use as a ring nut tool and I have no luck finding something cheaper that $150 .So I might have to order it since I was so good at stripping 2 Allen bolt .hehehe!!!! ~ Mario
Great post! Glad to see someone else getting dirty with their 348. Saving this to my favorites as I know I'm going to need to do mine at some point. My time is coming..... David
You guys kidding me???? Straight fit? no mods????? This is awesome....now to find this in Canada....or see if Pep Boys will ship to Canada. Thanks Ernie, Mike....you get second place...LOL **Update** Called a Fastner Supply place here in town, this place is bigger than Costco....should have some bolts there..... ~ Mario
I appreciate they are here in the UK but there is some useful info on this site - they seem to specialise in Ferrari clutches http://www.maddogclutches.co.uk/
Here is another ring nut socket option. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=322556 $15.79 right now on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015V1QF6?tag=5336432772-20
I will check the local parts shops tonight and see if I get anything since it's to remove a Ford Locknut I will also check those links from home Ernie....thanks. ~ Mario
Sent my pressure plate yesterday, it's now in the US on it's way to Friction Materials in Long Beach Cali. The next time I can work on my car is this weekend. There is a lot of dust in the clutch housing. I am thinking brake dust cleaner should do the trick. Picking up some gearbox and engine oil this weekend (ordered it), might as well change all the fluids since I'm in there. I switched to Valvoline VR1 20W50 from Castrol Syntec because I burned it like crazy, about 1.5 litre per 500 miles. The valvoline maybe a half a litre every 700 miles. Red Line 75W90 - No explanation needed, I already have it in there and it works great!!! Found a ring nut socket, $20.00 at the local Napa store who ordered my oil. They will have it tomorrow. Next....those bolts.....either 2 new ones or 9 new ones. I'm still worried about weight and if it will create an imbalance? This is looking good so far!!!! ~ Mario
Hey Mario, You're welcome to use mine... and I live in your area so you can just pick it up... http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=137417035&postcount=7 DF
