Whenever I shift between 1st and 2nd, my reverse lights go on... sometimes for a second or two... Is the switch something I can fix myself? If so, it is on the transmission or at the top of the shifter (near the shift gate)? Ideas? J
The switch is physically inside your shift console, inside the Reverse gate. It's pretty common for the rubber gearshift cover (just below your chrome shift gate) to tear or wrinkle or otherwise bump up against the reverse switch when you shift into 2nd gear from 1st. Usually just removing that rubber gearshift cover fixes the problem, however, you can also try to shift the position of your chrome gate (though it won't move much) by unscrewing the 2 screws that hold it in place. And the reverse switch itself is position adjustable. #17 is the reverse switch. #13 is your chrome shift gate. #12 are the screws that hold on your shift gate. Image Unavailable, Please Login
That exploded view doesn't actually show the boot, but ND's description is correct. If you remove the two screws and pull the chrome gate up to have a look at the base of the lever, I'm sure you will find that the boot is getting caught up against the push button on the reverse switch and giving a "false signal" that the lever is in reverse when it isn't. Easy one to diagnose and fix.
The boot is #3 on ND's diagram. Italian drawing skills seem to reach a peak around the Renaissance. Certainly 1989-1994 was not a high mark.
This is happening with my Spider... time to rip that boot out of there (and hope I don't drop anything into the gate in the future).
Ha! Yup. Here's one that I've got (well, mine's probably just a copy since The Met claims the original): Image Unavailable, Please Login
