Once again my shift lever has snapped. The last time I had it welded & re-chromed only for it to snap in a different fatigued area.So this time I had a few made of 4140 steel. These should last for a while. The facility that performed the work is amazing. They can & will make anything you bring in there out of any alloy big or small. If you can get it there for them to see it will be made. The shift levers were done in 24hrs.So if there are anymore parts that cant be bought ,have no fear. The water pressure lathe is amazing.
next up is the chrome shop.

Do you race the car and slam the gears a lot as I've never heard of this being a problem. Good luck with the situation.

I think the problem stemss from the fact that Im impatient wating for it to warmup & I start driving.I have the Redline Superlight fluid in the trans but it still has to warm up as we all know.I hear a 360 calling me.

The stock shifter shaft has a small bend at the base. Did you have them put this bend it the new ones? In the pics, it looks as though they are straight. The new units looks very nice! Although I am sure the new ones will last longer than the stock units, I think that it is very important for you to gain some patience when starting out on a drive. Taking off in your 348 before everything is up to temp can cause other damage that will be much more expensive to repair than a shift shaft. Can you give us an idea as to what the cost was for the new shift shafts? ;)

    New levers look fant-****en-tastic! :D:D

I would have also done the weld repair first if mine broke.

If it broke again, then Id have one made. But looking at them now, would be easier to just have a new one made.

I am very lucky I could have it made at work for free also.

A few years ago my shift lever snapped at the same spot on my 1999 F355. It was at a stop light. I managed to get it in 3rd with the nub and milked it home. Got a used one and it's good so far. Amazing the crap a so called high end car company uses. I always shift gently so there was no legit reason for it to fail.

Lots of good work into that :)

being a tool steel and likely around R35-40, and that it appears the wear zone is from the shift-gate contact, would this beneft from some surface hardening, before chroming done?

The harder and stiffer the metal, the more likely it is going to snap. I like titanium myself. I have 2 bicycle frames (Litespeed) made from it. I have had some horrendous wipe outs and the frame stays in 1 piece. I wish I could say the same for my bones....

not to further anneal or heat treat, but surface harder, before chroming (which does in somecases reduce strength), and thus help improve against surface wear in contact of the gate

The original area it snapped off was about an inch & a half up from the gate. Then is was welded & rechromed, then it snapped flush which was the next area of faigue. The 4140 is extremely strong & will last longer then I will for sure.I have had things heat treated but not for this type of application & I was told it wasnt needed. The rockwell strenght of the old one wasnt checked or the new one for that matter.I had the clutch shaft gear for my 348 made @ another place here & it was imperative that was heat treated. It toook 4 days & $950 to be done.I need a Ferrari that I dont have to know so much about machine shops )

Actually there was no wear in the area of the gate contact.

looking at the pictures there, that area is then machining post-welding then?
