Trying to complete my 30k service on my 348. My greatest problem now is my shift cables etc don't seem to want to go back exactly as they came out and shift properly. I don't get it, I didn't change anything - make certain not to change the orientation of the cables. I have searched the archives and asked for some help on the tech board but I still can't get it. It seems as thought the shift lever does not want to go the the right. I guess I need to know where should the "fork" that attaches to the shaft for the trans be when placing the trans in neutral - center and forward (toward front of car) or pushed in toward the rear of the car. Secondlly, in as much as I had the "fork" off the shaft (it is held by a single bolt - ) can that be placed on wrong, or will it only go on one way? The block that slides along the translator pin, is that supposed to be fully tightened down by the nut on the end or is that and adjustment too. I hesitate to loosen the adjusters on each of the cables because it shifted pretty well until I did the 30k service. There is little in the archives if anyone has anything they can add it surely would be appreciated. I know that Fandland had some difficutly following his 30K service too, but at least he can drive his car - I am not cure I can even find neutral!! It's midnight, I have had it apart a dozen times and I am stuck at this point.............and tired as hell. I bled the clutch today and now have a good pedal......anyhelp? Pap, Fandland, Ernie, No Doubt, Rifledriver....you guys have gotten me this far, I can't sink now! (I hope)

Mark - do you remember what gear (or neutral?) the car was in when you disconnected everything?

Okay here is the fatbillybob method from memory. Fatso correct my if I have this goofed up.

    1) Get the gearbox in neutral and then, put the gearbox completely in 2nd gear.

    2) Disconnect the cables from the selector at the gearbox.

    3) Position the shift lever out of gear and dead center in the shift gate.

    4) With the cables disconnected, have someone sit in the car and position the shifter in the 2nd gear slot. Have it positioned so that there is just barely a tiny bit of space between the end of the slot in the gate and the lever.

    5) Adjust the cables to fit in the selector holes at the gear box end, with the shift lever held firmly in place in the shift gate.

Give that a go and see how it works?

....I will try that Ernie, thanks. The shifter doesn't seem to want to go into anything on the right side of the gate.

Troy, I thought it was in neutral.....

Strange issue mate. So you with the cables disconnected.....you CANNOT move the gear lever in 4th and 5th?? The gear lever is the issue here, is that what you're saying mate? :):)

    Im a little confused I think. :D:D

Pap.....sorry you didn't understand but this is what I beleive has happened. The shaft coming out of the trans has a piece that bolts onto it ike a squeeze connection. It appears as though that part can be placed on the shaft in any number of configurations. I assumed it could slip on only the way it came off. So now I am unsure if the car was even in neutral when I pulled it off. That is my dilemma. The way it is set up now it will go into first and third only, engine off or running. (At least the gear shift lever is in first and third - that maybe incorrect at this point too).

I find it more easy to locate netrual on the gear box, and then have someone holding the leaver in the car while bolting the cables back on.

    Okay.

The shaft on the gear box has a notch in it. The notch is so that a screw can slide through and clamp down the selector knuckle onto the shaft only one way. You can see the allen screw on the knuckle in the picture, to the left of the screw driver tip. Are you sure that you have that screw tightened down, or that it isn't missing?

    My 2c worth.

Had the same problem with mine and found it was the clamp at the front of the rubber gear box boot that hold the outter cable ends.

The cable MUST fit into the slots in the housing, not in front or behind the slots it is easy to have one or both cable in the wrong position and the adjustment goes to S**T.

    Good luck
