So my old boot that sits below the shift gate was mangled and when I put it in 2nd gear my reverse lights came on. My tech basically said, eh get rid of the boot and cut it out... so I would be able to look down and see below the shift gate into the linkages.

I ordered a new boot from ferrparts. I tried to put the boot on, but seems it stick out a bit on the rod, so when I shift it actually hits the rubber against the gate. did I install it wrong.

oh and I cracked my f'in ashtray trim. way to go. $35 boot turns into $200 broken piece... LOL..

That is a common issue (the reverse lights, not the cracking parts). I just took mine out, it doesn't bother me what it looks like down there.

I think this thread can be merged with the 'Slick shift gate for 348' recent thread.

I took the crappy foam out as well but then, I now hear a metallic noise coming from the shift gate when driving. I don't like it. I will order soon the newer and revised rubber boot, (was installed in later 348 models) and i just found out in another thread the part #

yeah, I hear a slight noise too. the boot I ordered was new so I am sure it was the most recent revision. the issue is that the nipple sticks out a little too high and gets stuck in the shift gate. maybe I put the boot on wrong or didnt slide it all the way down.

actually, I looked at the image of the boot again. I think mine just accordianed out a bit when I slid it on wrong the first time... should be an easy fix... I think Im going to get the updated slick shift gate too... very cool.

Why are you guys breaking your ashtray? Is there an issue with the rubber boot that causes this to happen? I was planning on adding this to my car, but you have made think twice now.

The thin frame that wraps the ashtray door is very fragile. Any time you remove the ashtray you're at risk of snapping the thing.

Ha! - just came across this thread when searching for something else. I had that stupid piece of foam scare the hell out of me on the highway a few months ago! - I couldn't get the shifter into 4th, then after some coaching, got it in, then couldn't get it out. Stuck my fingers in there and it had moved all the way to the right and jammed - then stuck in 5th!

I managed to move it around but would like to get rid of it - where did you get a replacement - or should I even bother and just pull it out completely?

By the way, I broke my ashtray trim too pulling it out to test my gas cap switch. (which turns out I need a new solenoid - anyone know where to get one of those at a reasonable price?)

    Thanks guys!

I got my new ashtray from ferrariparts.co.uk. about $160 shipped. takes a while and the order process is a pain in the ass. you order and then wait for them to confirm and then you pay, they also have the rubber boot.

Shemm, don't even bother replacing that foam/sponge boot, you will eventually have the same problem with the new one. I removed mine, 2 philips screws on the shifter gate and you can access it to remove it. Doesn't look the greatest without it, but who looks downs there and more importantly the problem is solved.

just t cirlce back. turns out I had not installed the new rubber boot fa enough down the shift stick. for anyone replacing the rubber boot, you have to pull it over the small square at the base of the stick and make sure the boot does not accordian out as you slide it down into position. Again, be careful not to crack your ashtray when putting everything back together.

Those rubber boots are tricky little things to fit sometimes.
