I have only driven the car on warmer days (80+) and never really noticed anything wrong. However lately it has been cooler ... 70's ... and I have started to notice a slight grind going into second and third at higher rpms ... It is less when the car warms up, however I am starting to wonder if I have something more sinester going on here. Are these cars really that different in cooler wheather or am I losing a clutch or something bigger. I have tried the 5th gear floor it test ... no slipage.

Just the stock stuff but after doing a search maybe I need to consider Red Line's superlight shockproof gear oil. I have never changed the gear oil ... is there a thread for a do-it yourselfer

I have a 328, similar gearbox. It is very definitely temperature sensitive, especially shifting into 2nd. The first couple of minutes the car is running, I keep the engine revs very low.

As far as the grinding, if it persists after the gear oil is warm I think you may have a bigger issue, but will defer to the 348 Brotherhood as to whether it's The Really Bad Issue (348 gearbox self-destruct mode) or something else.

I know gear oil can help, but I don't know of a reason for grinding going into 2nd or 3rd under normal operating temps.

Rifledriver felt into the gear box for the notorious 'nut' problem, and didn't find it on mine...might have that checked out.

Just put in Redline Syn on the recommendation of VVassallo and it definitely slips into second easier now. Still nothing like my M3 box, but much better than before.

Don't have the same issue with the grinding noise, but overall this gearbox just seems to need to warm up to function like I would expect it to. Just my 2cts.

    my advice is:

    1) change transmission oil to Redline MT 90 or 75w90 NS (make sure its NS)
    http://www.redlineoil.com/products_gearlubricants.asp?productID=38&subCategoryID=15&categoryID=6

    2) change the OEM shift gate with Slick Shift Gate (hill engineering)
The "Slick Shift" gate has a ergonomically modified gate pattern that has been designed for faster + smoother shifting
    http://www.hillengineering.co.uk/catalog/slick-shift-gates-c-3.html?osCsid=c1df1d301dfe8ec06489af51e4da36a8

    3) lube up 2 transmission cables that run under the car

    4) spray periodically the shift gate (I do this every 2 weeks or so) white grease spray or wd40

    5) When the car is cold, when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, do so at 4100RPMs

With these changes you´ll have a very different car, for the better of course.

Thanks everyone ... my service is scheduled for next week and I'll be sure to change all the oils with redline (motor and tranny) ... lube everything and look into the new shift gate.

Redline has a variety of gear oils, some with very similar names. 75W90, for instance, makes no difference in shifting the 348. 75W90NS, on the other hand, does make a difference and is a proper GL5 oil per Ferrari recommendations. Redline's Super Light Shockproof is the best of all, but may not meet Ferrari specs.

I've used several of Redline's gear oils in my 348...including the rather poor Redline MTL (a GL4 gear oil that fails Ferrari's recommendation for 348 specs).

If you want to stick with Ferrari specs, then the 75W90NS is about the best that you can do for your shifting. Some 348 trannys may need a friction modifier added if chatter is noticed coming from the diff during hard corners.

If you just want the absolute best shifting, Ferrari specs be hung, then go with the Redline Super Light Shockproof. It's been working well for me (track, street, and skidpad drifting).

Yup. Spraying white lithium grease down under the shift gate area (below rubber boot if you have one under your gate) and lubing the cables is time well spent (and easy to do). As is shifting above 4000 rpms when cold. You also want a small amount of grease on your stick shift area where it rubs on the shift gate.

The other added benefit to the aftermarket Hill shift gate is that you get your reverse lockout safety feature back...as many 348s will wear out the lock nub on the factory OEM shift gate, which allows you to grind into Reverse if you miss a shift.
