348 Speciale

I have been an Alfa owner ('67 duetto and 74 GTV) for over 25 years and I have decided to "step up" to a Ferrari. I have been looking at 348's on Ebay and other sources and saw a 348 ss (#90) on Ebay. Does anyone know anything about this car. I noticed that this car seems to have chrome wheels while the other 348SS's have flat silver wheels that look more original. Also, what are the key issues for the 348 SS? Thanks!

 

The 348 SS was a lightly modified version of the 348 for the US market. There were approximately 100 made. The changes from the standard car are:

wider offset to the rear wheels giving better handling

rear lights are uncovered and brought out and flush with the rear of car with a different grill and chrome horse.

front lip spoiler

body color for the lower valance and engine cover

carbon fiber sport seats. These were put in about 50 cars and was discontinued as wide Americans were breaking them. I have them and they are great...but need some lumbar support.

shorter gear ratios for better acceleration

commenrative badge in car

I think that's pretty much it. Here's a shot of mine in SS and Challenge trim.

If you are thinking about buying one....just check it out as you would any car.

Sorry for the ****ty layout, I got them in excel also if you're interested. The 5-digit number found with some cars is the enginenumber. I'm not 100% on the last car because the serie number is not in order. This can be:
1. Typo
2. Some sources say 112 were built, so maybe they started at 000 again
3. Some sources say the plates were added to the cars later for some reason, and they couldn't find some cars. No6 was lost for some time I believe. So maybe this car was found very late and had a weird number fixed???

alright. Its called "unloved ferraris" and it has the 400 superamerica and the 348 in general, but the 348 is an SS.

Correct, that is NOT an SS...

 

Didn't Forza actually do a buyers guide on the 348? It had a little section about the SS and was mainly on the regualr model but it might help you. I would scan it but my magazines are not here. Sorry.
