When i bought my spider it had the stereo system that i assume was installed in 1994, sony cassette, cd changer, and two crappy door speakers. i too love the sound that come out the tailpipes ,but sometimes you just want to hear some good music with the top down . I searched the threads for ideas on rear speaker enclosures but there isn't much for inspiration, either some awkward home made looking enclosures or way too much for my taste with multiple subs and so. i also wasn't fond of the footwell solution. So here's a few pics of what we came up with

First we installed an a/d/s ph 15 , my favorite alpine headunit, an alpine component system in the doors ( we also sealed the door openings with dynamat )and fabbed up a nice tidy harness to integrate it all.

We mocked up the enclosure in cardboard so the top would fold around it nice and neat , built the flat sections out of 1/4 plywood and used aluminum to create the curves, skim coated it with body filler to tie it all together , sanded it. adhered headliner foam to it , covered it in some nice topstiched leather , and then gave it some finishing touches.

sounds great, it won't compete with a system with two 12 inch subs , but it's clean powerful and finally has some rear speakers to fill the car with great sound.and in my opinion the seatbelt solution looks better than the cheesy factory cover

Looks great and clever to put the belts right through it rather than trying to work around them, but what happens when you put the boot over the folded top?

The boot cover fits just as it did and the ph15 has plenty of guts to power thru the material. Even if there is slightly less treble it is a vast improvement over the nothingness that was there.
