Finally took the targa top off my '91 348 today. It was an awesome drive. The top fit behind the seats without a problem but I realized that there is a possibility of scratching the top.

Anyone know where I can get a cover for it? Mine didn't come with the factory original. . .also, anyone know if the factory original was leather to match the interior or vinyl? How much do they run?

    Thanks

    Ed

p.s. Still have to work on my nonworking side mirrors and now I notice that occasionally, the speedometer doesn't register correctly. . .could a cable be loose?

There is more than a possibility of scratching the targa top when it is stored behind the seats - it's a certainty, a very bad design! The screw heads on the seat back panels will dig right into it. Even with the cover over the targa top, you can still scratch the paint if the seat is too close to the top.

The cover for the targa top is made of vinyl, and it's Ferrari part # 63348200 (Tav 105, #28). I don't know the current price, I paid $240 plus tax for mine five years ago (from the dealer), and I'll bet the price hasn't come down! One of these sold on ebay about six weeks ago. It would not be particularly difficult to make one out of vinyl if you had one to use as a pattern.

The speedometer does not operate via a cable, it's all electronic. The usual problem is the sending unit ("pulse sensor") on the transmission, Ferrari part #116987.

I'm pretty confident that you can fix the power mirrors yourself, with a little guidance from "brotherhood".

It would be easier and cheaper to take the top down to an auto-trimmer and get them to measure and make one. My old mate here has a 1981 Porsche 911 targa top. He got a cover made for the targa top locally for next to nothing. Got it made in vinyl. Go that way, unless you want a genuine cover?? :)

Just as step 1 in diagnosing the problem with your power mirrors, fuse #5 in the step panel fuse box provides power to the wipers, stop lights, and power mirrors. If both of your mirrors are inoperative, chances are that there is no power getting to the switch on the left door panel. The wire in question is blue with a black stripe. It comes from the brake light switch (mounted at the pedal under the dash), through the multi-pin connector at the left door jamb, to the power window switch. The most likely problem is a bad connection or a broken pin at the multi-pin connector.

If you pull back the rubber boot at the twist connector in the door jamb, you will be able to see about 18 wires that should be attached to pins. Look for the blue/black wire. Is the wire broken where it attaches to the pin? Can you take a test light and get power at that wire with the ignition on? If yes, the problem is further upstream inside the door panel. If no, test for power at the same wire where it attaches to the brake light switch. If you have power there, but not at the pin, then the pin is probably corroded so badly that no current is flowing through it.

The problem might turn out to be something else, but this is what I would check first, and it can easily be done at home without taking anything apart.

Is your targa top painted or the black pebble finish? I have stored my targa top behind the seats several times and never had a problem with it. It would have been nice if they had kept the post in the front design of the 308 / 328 so you don't have to spin the top around to store it properly. Still great to ride with the targa stored!

to keep the screws from the seats from cutting into the cover, you can mount rubber bumpers /from home depot-cabinet door section/on the screws, you just need longer screws .

As a new Ferrari 348 owner I was so excited to get the top off I did not stop to think that the screws behind the seat would muck up my top. BUT I LEARNED THE HARD WAY!!!

I quickly went to a CRAFT shop and bought a set of BLACK felt pads. They are about the size of a DIME. I applyed them over the screws behind the seat and you can't even tell they are there!! No problems now. The pads cost me 49 cents!!

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, wore it out. What a horrendous design from Ferrari. Sometimes I think the design work was contracted out to a gang of gypsies.

My OEM top is scratched too.... but you can be darn sure I'm more careful with the carbon fiber one!

I've got a new F355 targa top cover that was sent to me by mistake (I paid for it but didn't order it).

    I'll take 200.00 for it.
