Until the thread was posted about a week ago I was unaware that any targa tops were painted to match the body color. My own has a "fabric" finish that is in need of repair. Do the painted tops simply have the "fabric"removed and then are painted or are these special tops? also does anyone know what "fabric" to use in replacing the original?

Actually it might be neat to have one of each.

The tops are fiberglass with a textured finish. Some owners had them smoothed out and painted in body color. Looks fantastic. I'd do it too if I get a second top so I could keep the stock look.

I believe all the TS cars pre-1993 had the tops with the black pebble finish, just like the lower sills and valence areas on the bumpers. I like it, and have left it the factory color for the targa top only. I think I would scratch up a paint finish while storing the targa top. To me the car looks more modern with the lower body panels painted, so I went with that look. See the similarity with the new Mosler MT900s? Red body, dark canopy...

The painted top was introduced with the Speciale in 1992. None of the regular TS's came with it painted as standard.

There are a few TS's around with a lightweight carbon top and a folding cloth roof (it folds up like a picnic chair). These are rare as hen's teeth and are very expensive as can be expected. I think Daniel has one of these two kinds of top :)

William, when you say you have a fabric top - are you refering to the inside of the top or the outside?

I'M REFERRING TO THE TEXTURED FINISH ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE TOP. AS I MENTIONED MINE HAS A FEW SCARS AND I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE IT REFINISHED BUT AM AT A LOSS AS TO WHERE TO HAVE THIS DONE. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO SEND IT TO THE MAINLAND (CONTINENTAL US) TO HAVE THIS PROPERLY ADDRESSED.

    THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY.

I think a decent auto paint shop will be easily able to handle it.

I had noted this on another targa top thread, but I have one for sale in the Parts section if anyone is interested - great shape. Had bought as an upgrade to the one on my 348SS, and then traded the car last week. Truck is actually coming for the car tomorrow (and to drop off my 550.) I also have a 348 Tubi for sale as a result (nearly new.) I had just resigned myself to keeping it and along came the 550!
