When you change out the timing belt on a 348 there are 2 parts that ride against the outside of the belt by the top of each banks upper cam. They look as if they should ride on the belt, not sure what the purpose would be other then to keep the belt from jumping a tooth or vibrating, anyhow should these ride directly on the belt or be adjusted to a specific clearance? I cant find anything on it in the manual

Just checking before I put the motor back in.

There was a thread on this a while back, do a search & you should find it. I think the decision was just enough clearance that it does NOT ride on the belt. Like a matchbook cover space...
Dont quote me but I believe that was the popular thought on the gap.
Doesnt make sense to have a metal object touching continuous on the belt. Something just to protect it from jumping I believe is the purpose..

I set mine to have around 1mm clearance. Here are a few pics of mine when I pulled them out to see if they were rubbing on the belt. As you can see in the 1st pic, my LH side one was installed backwards and I could not get the 1mm feeler gauge in there. It must have been rubbing on the belt, as you can see from the guide being a little worn with the small amounts of rubber on it and in the top of the cam cover. I removed it, cleaned it and fit it the correct way and set it to have around 1mm clearance. I dont think there is an actual spec for it, but 1mm should be ok IMO. :)

Pap is spot on, 1mm gap minimum. DO NOT let the guides touch the belt!!!

Pap, yours is upside down. The guide is supposed to stand upright and be close to the belt where it wraps around the upper portion of the sprockets at about 1 and 11 o'clock on the 2 sprockets.

I know that thanks mate. :) I picked up on that when I removed the cover and took the pic with the feeler gauge in there. After I removed the guide and cleaned it, it was installed the correct way as you mentioned. It must have been put in backwards when the cam belt was done last in 2003. The RH guide was in there correctly, it was only the LH one that was backwards. Thanks again Brian. :)
