Just got a '91 348ts, and I won't lie, the leather tool and manual cases helped push me over the edge to buy the car. I really, really like decent leather luggage. But after getting the car home and having a closer look, it appears the cases needed some help. Here is my leather refurbishment thread.

I don't know what all that black stuff is. There's other stains and water spots, and the leather is generally dry. This car being a horse, I went to the local horse tack shop to get saddle soap to clean the leather. This little tub of cleaner is $15. Maybe the cheapest thing you can buy for your Ferrari?

Well, they cleaned up well. Got most of the stains off, but there will remain a few spots that I'll chalk up to patina. Color is a little dark in this picture because they're still damp. After letting them dry overnight, they lightened up again and the leather was still a bit dry and stiff, especially in the top bends/corners of the tool case.

So I used one of my favorite leather conditioners called "Leather Honey." It also temporarily darkens the leather, but then returns to its original color and texture. The last picture shows them a day after the conditioning. That's it!

    Great job, thanks for sharing.

I need to tidy mine up also, it's not as bad as your tool kit originally was but it's not far from it.

Looking forward to doing it one day, along with everything lol.

You purchased a Ferrari being based on the condition of the leather tool and manual cases?
First I ever heard of that and I hope the car is not the same condition of those cases.
What does your car require. Does it require a major service. Any pictures?
    What's interior like?

I bought mine based on this drawing in the manual. How many owner's manuals include a section view of the engine? For me, as an engineer, that sealed the deal. Of course a really positive PPI didn't hurt either. :)

No, didn't buy it based on the condition of the cases. I was just delighted to see them there. The rest of the car is much nicer than the cases, BTW. Yes it needs a major. More info on my Ferrari (I don't get tired of saying that) on this thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/348-355-sponsored-bradan/535772-need-advice-348-shopping.html

After all this, I'm thinking the tool case isn't original to the car. The leather straps don't fit this horizontal case unless it's on its side, like it's meant for the vertically-oriented cases I've seen.

Does anyone know which cases came with which cars?

I need to decide if I'm going to modify the car's straps to fit my current case, or be on the lookout for a vertical case.

Really? This is the only way it can be strapped in, on its side. Pic was taken before I restored the leather. So this is correct?

I've been poking around the internet trying to find a philips head screwdriver in that translucent brown finish handle to complete my tool kit. In the process, I'm being passively educated about the different tool kits and bags that came with the various models and years of Ferrari.

I have to say, the '90s Ferraris including our 348 and 355 have the most well-appointed and presentable tool kits I've ever seen. Not a sloppy vinyl roll like earlier years, not a simple folding case with few tools like later years. We get a beautiful, sturdy leather case full of half-decent tools, enough to drop your engine. (If only they'd include a lug wrench :)). Or... maybe it's a foreboding sign that Ferrari includes this many tools, and tries to make you feel better about it with such a nice case. I don't care, I love it!

Have you determined it is the right case? I am looking for one for my 355.

That's the same tool kit as my 91 348. The one in my 97 355 was much bigger/taller and had the tire repair inside the kit.
