Okay guys I have a question about my transmission. I was at FatBillyBob's on Thursday putting my trans back together, with the help of Fatboy and Plugzit, and ran into a snag. While putting the main shaft together I found out that the cage bearings I ordered were not the same as what I took out. The bearings that I took off the main shaft were a single split cage, double row needled bearing type. The split part meaning they would look like two half moons when separated, and when put together they make a complete circle. Anyway the bearings that I got were were single cage, single row bearings that were one piece and not split. The width of the cage from the single row bearings is smaller than the double row bearings, but when you stack both the single row cages they are the same width as the double row. Hope I'm making sence. I called Dan about the bearings, and this guys is nothing short of fantastic when it comes to helping his customers. I was wondering if the two single rows were an update for the one double row. Dan did some great research and sent me the pics at the bottom. The first picture is of what my main shaft looks like, and you can see #7 & #15 shows the two double row bearings. Dan couldn't find anything about an update for the 348 main shaft. This is were Dan is so awesome with help, he looked all the way back, to the days of cowboys and indians , and found a picture of what I was describing on a 308 shaft. If you look at the second picture it shows both style bearings. #26 is the split cage double row and #10 is the single row. So here is my delema. I need to buy two more bearings no matter what. If I go with the single rows I'm gonna need two more for the other side. If I go with the double row split cage I'm gonna need two, one for each side. Either way I have to buy two more bearings. So was the update the double row split cage, or was it the two single rows stacked together? Billbob, Plugitz and myself talked about it and think that we should go with two more single rows. The reason is because the needle bearings on the single rows are bigger than the needle bearings on the double row. So we are thinking the they will carry the load better. But what I'm wondering is will the two cages of the single rows be a problem with friction, as they need to be stacked in order to fill the same space as the split cage double row, and as the shaft rotates will they create more friction, and worse possible wear? So before I go forward and order the bearings, I want to make sure I'm putting in the "updated" bearings in and not the old style. I want to do this right the first time, because if you don't do it right the first time you're just gonna have to do it again, and I DO NOT want to have to tear this thing appart again. Why does everything have to be such a pain in the ass with these cars? Soooo........... do I go with the single row or double row, and which one is the update? Ernie - Just to complete the picture for our esteemed colleagues, here is the 1994 348 picture, which continues to show the same "whole" bearings (#36 and #37). FIRST PICTURE. Working backwards through parts books (94 348, 92 348, 90 348, 1988 328, 308 QV, 308GTSi, and finally '77 308) the only place I found the "split half moons" even existing was in the 78 308 book. And even in 1978, Ferrari made reference to the alternate "whole" bearing. SECOND PICTURE Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks again Dan. I'm telling you the manuals are horribly written books. They are just crap. The pictures aren't very clear, and the discriptions are the absolute worst. Now after seeing the picture for the 94 gearbox, I'm thinking I just may need to get the double row bearings? I wish I could get a definate answer on this.
NO! Ernie you ain't listening boy. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHICH BEARING STYLE YOU GO WITH. BOTH STYLES DO THE SAME THING. Are you going to get the 2 large Diff Bearings too while you are at it? Say yes...billybob..."I'm going to call Ricambi America and order them today." Geez by the time you order this stuff there will be another update. Daniel just put that stuff on his creditcard and ship it. You and I both know he is going to have to buy the right stuff. I'm not sure why Ernie is dinking around...
Yes LARDASS I'm going to order the two diff bearings! As for the cage bearings, I understand they do the same thing, but why do they use double rows on one shaft and single on the other? Or is this another one of those, what in the fooking-a were they thinking deals?!
Damn Ernie here I tell you exactly what I have in mine along with my notes and you still aren't giving Daniel the money to get the parts....what the heck is wrong with you. I am with you buddy cause these manuals are stupid as all hell. Hopefully my PM to you cleared up what I had in my car and I am again sorry I was intoxicated when I responded first and mixed my bearings up. That must be why the Ferrari manuals are so bad, no soda in the machines just wine there.
Grasshopper, Why do you ask so many questions? Sometimes a flower is just a flower and sometimes a bearing is just a bearing. Accept the universe for what it is and be "one" with it. The key to enlightenment is to eat more rice.
Oh brother, have you been hitting the Saki again and watching Kung Fu Theater. If there is one thing you do not to do is eat more. Landsakes man I don't know what is more expensive, my parts bill or your food bill. LOL.
Well kids I found the answer to my question. YES it was as the Fat One said, it doesn't matter, but we already knew that. I just wanted to know "why", and now I do. See the problem was I was trying to make sence out of Ferrari's nonsence. It turns out that it all depends on what bearings are available at the time. If the split cages double rows were available then that is what Ferrari would use, if it was two single rows then that is what they would use. What would be nice is if they would pass that information on to the next guy. Oh wait a minute, there I go again trying to interject some sence into Ferrari's nonsence. "Fricken Idiots"
