The same reason why the rest of us had to pull our tranny's. The stupid bearing cage blew up on the oil pump side of the transmission, went through the case, and destroyed some gears. The flash from the camera.
I havent had this much fun since I fell into a wood chipper . Not true , since I fell on a sword . No , since I removed a bus transmission with tweezers ...(hahahaha) Bad news , it doesnt look cheap in there . Good news ................................
this will keep you busy during those long, cold winterdays. Nice to look at these DIY jobs. Best jurgen
Holy crap! This is the same gear box the 355 uses right? Did the factory make any changes since the 348? Is there anything one can do to prevent this from happening (aside from not driving the car)? Is this just destined to happen, time being the only factor?? Should one rebuild the gearbox before this happens? Is there an "upgraded" bearing cage that replaces the bad one with? Or does one just deal with groundhogs day? Is there any signs/sounds one should look out for? Sorry for the tons of questions. I am just up to the hilt in projects right now (home remodel) and can't see myself doing this anytime soon!
When the loud whining noises emit from the trans , fix it . The longer you drive it the worse it gets . no noise no problem . If you want to do it preventatively it could be a good idea to minimize part replacement from potnetial subequent damage in the future .
Sorry false unconfirmed rumor. I rebuilt my GB and now I race my GB it had been perfect. IMO the problem comes from faulty assemby in the factory or by others. I think I have rebuilt or have been invloved in the rebuild of perhaps 6 of these.
So, FBB, are you saying these rebuilds are fun? Is that due to the consumption of beer and pizza during the process?
No, he is talking about a whine. Kind of like what you would hear using a tow wench. It's a gear whine, no whistling.
Yup.my car was down all summer, had to change all the bearings...$4000.00 just in parts, the tranny was howling like a German shepherd....
