Ok so I am an idiot...changed oil (Mobil 1 5w50-rallye formulae), oil filter, changed air filter to K&N, all good. Cleaned all electrical connections around the engine, O2 sensor engine mass flow sensor etc etc, used WD 40. Warmed engine up (Catalyst temp protection kicked in, heard its throaty rattle until up to temp, no problems). Drove 5 miles or so passed a vehicle , accelerated hard in 3rd, noted a high frequency rattle around 4000 (guessing - wasn't watching the tach) before changing up to 4th. Another 4 miles, no issues. parked for 40 mins, started up, CEL for 1/4 came on. Wouldn't idle without throttle input. Restarted CEL off, few mniutes CEL1/4 back on. CEL 5/8 on then off. CEL 1/4 on and off (more on) CEL 5/8 now and again throughout 8 mile journey. No loss of power noted on duration of run.

Thinking WD40 might be an issue so re-cleaned connections all with elec contact cleaner the next day, thoroughly cleaned all connections.

Re started (Catalyst temp protect system did not kick in) from cold, CEL lights out, they lit after a say 45 secs or so 1/4 more than 5/8. Revving engine knocked CEL out after a short delay. Engine ran smooth until a magic temp of around 140 deg F or so, then wouldn't idle, petered to a stop. Restarts but condition repeats.

Is this a simple cycle power to ECU's? Any ideas?, anyone had this occur.

    Welcome to Fchat!
Check your codes. Use the search function (top right button on Fchat) to find out how. We'll help for sure, but need more info.
Don't feel bad. A few of us whose names we won't mention have done things like this in the past.

BTW, check the 348/355 section on your search as well. LOADS of info there. Also, make My Ferrari 348 your bedtime reading.

    Thanks Guy's

Found a post also that points me to a supplier that allows me to purchase the test lead 146196 and push-button 145810 (mine does not have the test PB) but they say that Ferrari discontinued the test lead 3 years ago. Any idea where i can get one or a wiring diagram for the lead, i.e which of the 3 pins do i jumper to get at the codes.

Oh, must be getting smarter....found the test lead / push button in the car toolbox! obvious spot to put it, also switch wiring diagram is in the workshop manual.

OK so pulled codes as follows

    5/8 4121,1211,1114...1/4 1114,1111,1211

Any thoughts, don't see code descriptors in the workshop manual

If you haven't already found the explanation of the codes go to: My Ferrari 348

I had similar symptoms and the brotherhood explained how to build my own test wire, read the codes and then resolve each of the problems. By cleaning all the contacts as you did, cleaning and then resetting the MAF's, and then replacing both O2 Sensors my car started and ran perfectly. I was able to buy the replacement O2 sensors from Bosch for a lot less than OEM.

    Good luck!

OK despite my initial stupidity with the use of WD40 on connectors. Turns out the O2 sensors were at fault. Car is running like a dream, probably better than I remember which is indicative that the O2 sensors may have been on the way out and coincidence prevailed. This makes some sense since I don't comprehend why external use of WD40 would have led to sensor failure. Anyway all's good. Thanks to all for the input

Thought it would be good to share as follows.

The Sensor is Bosch as commonly informed and on my348.com and found a number of sources including China at $26each

    OxygenSensors.com $69.99 of Wlaker manufacturer

Ricambi Oxygen Sensors: Ricambi America - Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini Parts At $125 each which is competatively priced and is an original Boscvh part. I went with these to maintain originality. Arrived in 3 days - perfect! Rick at Ricambi was very helpful on the phone

Disappointed in local Ferrari dealer. Prior to identifying the fault I called for some fault code help while still freaking out, genuinely explaining if its not simple/stupid i would bring it in but don't even know if its safe to drive without damaging the engine...gave him the fault codes. No problem said the helpful voice, when our tech returns i will have him call you before close of business. 2 weeks later no call.

Plenty of part cross reference web sites point out the many cars that this Ferrari part number sensor can be found on, Volvo 850, Fiat (obvious one), and many more, principally European manufactures
