348 Tubi test pipes

    Hi all,

    Please don't let this one turn into an ethical debate about polluting the environment!

    Okay, here's the important question... what warning light issues have come as a result of fitting the Tubi test pipes to (and removing the catalysts from) the 348? For example, does the "Check Engine" light come on at all?

    (I am told to check the thermocouple and lambda sensor in each bank of cylinders before fitting the test pipes... I actually have no idea what these things even do.)

    PS I still haven't found a used Tubi for my '92 348... any leads? Please send me a private message. Also looking for test pipes :)

    your warning lights should not come on at all (other that the the usual, initial light at engine start). mine dont. unless you have a faulty unit to begin with. (LOTSof info here on THIS subject....)

    Your OM will also have some good information on both subjects so you might check that out too.

    The thermocouple is a sensor for measuring the temperature of the exhaust gas leaving the cat. Since the test pipe has no catalytic structure inside you can either just: 1) tie up the thermocouple somewhere out of the way, or 2) they often put a mounting fitting on the testpipe so it can go there if so equipped (it really won't be used functionally if you have a test pipe because unburned fuel in the exhaust gas won't ignite in a test pipe -- whereas, in a cat it will ignite).

    The lambda sensor measures the oxygen content of the exhaust gas entering the cat (or test pipe), and its output signal is used by the injection system to fine tune the amount of fuel supplied to the engine -- you need to have the lambda sensor in place (and working ;)) whether you have cats or test pipes.
