So I'm heading to work this morning, traveling through the Tate's Cairns Tunnel. I'm about 3km in with 1km to go when the rear pasanger side tyre explodes. This is peak hour and I have to decide whether to keep going and risk further damage or stop and cause chaos and probabley an accident or 3. I chose to slow to 10kph and limp out. Incredibley, the rim suffered no damage and body damage happened in the first couple os seconds.

Only about 70 kph. Tyres were new when I bought her nearly two years ago. But are due for replacement. Done about 35000ks. The tyre grabbed the front lip and pulled it out a little. Nothing throwing money wont fix . I forgot to say, about 10 minutes later, another car emerged with a destroyed tyre. Maybe something on the road? Thanks for your concern Pap, mike.

Glad that you are OK and that you were able to get out of the tunnel without an accident or a serious situation.

    YOU ARE LUCKY!
I had a spontaneous catosrphic tire failure with a Dunlop at speed a while back...there are steel cables inside these radial tyres and they unravelled and whipped around so fast they pratically destroyed the rear quarter of teh car they were on and since it was a roadster they were whipping dangerously close to the cockpit as well....long story short..Dunlop wrote me a letter upon examining the tire and told me it was a defective tire.. after years of back and forth Summitomo ( the new Dunlop owner sold the brand and they and the new owners told to forget it) lots of wheel/ body damage but only cosmetic and thankfuly no one hurt.
