A brand new one from Superformance is less than that price right now (£295.95). The one I got from Superformance is a Capristo unit with a metal impeller.

Good to know. Thanks. However, note that the price on the site Matt linked includes a $200 core charge, so the rebuild price is actually only $230. No idea if they're any good, or how they would compare to the one sold by Superperformance UK. It's nice to have options though.

I looked extensively a few years ago to find bearings to rebuild 348 pumps. The only bearing I was able to find was a very poor quality bearing from China. Most pumps only need to support the load of the drive belt but a 348 acts as an idler for the timing belt. Not a good place not to use a bearing as good as the OE design. I have no reason not to believe the Capristo designed their pump around a high quality bearing of sufficient capacity.

I'm done rebuilding water pumps, especially for a 348. Just too many expensive failures. Get the best new one you can afford.

Excellent info, Brian. Thank you! I've heard about bearing concerns in those pumps before. As you say, the potential consequences of a water pump failure in a 348 are much greater than in most cars.

This guy lives a few miles away, have never used him but he has been doing it for awhile. He was in business back in the late 90s when I had a 328.
    Look under rebuilt parts.

That sounds awesome! Since new OEM pumps are listed at over $1500 for the 348.

Also, are you sure it's a Capristo pump. The only one they show on their website is their improved version ($840 with today's exchange rate, not including shipping).

Ordered the one from Superformance, just arrived. I don't believe it is Capristo... curious as to what you received, Wade. No Capristo labeling on the impeller or housing, and while it is a metal impeller, it appears cast, without what looks like a lathe turn or other machining operation around the circumference, as John's seems to have.

Superformance describes it as aftermarket and italian in origin. Housed in a plain brown cardboard box, no branding.
