Just curious if anyone has ever fitted a 348 with a 355 engine/gearbox or if it's even theoretically possible. I think a '93 348 GTS or GTB with a 355 motor would be a real nice combination :)

Someone registered on the 348 forum a few months back and in his profile it said he had a 348 with a 355 engine.

A 360 engine in a 348 would be uber cool.

Would you not be better off selling your 348 and picking up a 355?

It was just a question out of curiousity. I've got a 328 not a 348. However, I prefer the exterior and interior of the 348 over the 355 although I love the 355 rear end. Don't want to turn this into a styling debate :) Just my preference.

I also like the idea of no power steering, air bags or electronically adjustable suspension etc. on the 348. However, the extra power of the 355 engine, the sound, higher redline, non-cable shifter?, two timing belts instead of one, would be great.

A 348 with the rear suspension sorted out and a 355 engine with no header or valve issues.... yeah baby......... :)
(but it has to be a Euro with no mousebelts!)

Actually, I was wondering if a recent Maserati engine would go in the 355. The engine block is the same as the 430, right? Might be a decent fit and would be incredibly cost-effective (and they use timing chains). Heh.

i think it would only be worthwhile in case your 348 powertrain is broken and you have the option to get a 355 powertrain at low cost...

    ...and then supercharge it

    :D

Only problem is that the 355 engines are around 3 times the price of a 348 one.

    Texas of course!
Thought about this also before because I've found both a masser and a 355 engine for a good deal a few months ago.

Maybe one of the gurus could answer this, but I'd like to know if the 348 heads and cams could be used on a 355 block.

There's been some mention that the 5 valves per cylinder really didn't help the 355 engine. I don't know if that's accurate or not, so I'm just wondering if the 4 valves per cylinder and 348 heads/cams would work on the 355 block...maybe treat it like a bored out 348?

Just a thought. I'll probably get flamed for said thought, too!

As the 355 engine is much more prone to trouble, I would think the ideal would be the 348 in the 355, not the other way around. But what do I know.

lol, thats kindof what I was thinkin! I wouldnt inherit all the notorious 355 motor problems to gain a mere 80 (indicated by the factory) horse power!!
On the other hand, owning an ENTIRE 355 might persuade me to take that chance... not that i'm interested in trading, but even I cannot overcome the awsome drawing power of a Rosso or Fly 355 GTS with all black interior and a 6 speed manual!

Now if this was a matter of swapping the tranny... i'd be cheering for ya!

    More like 40..maybe..

Personally I think the 355's advantages lie more in the gearbox and lighter wheels etc. than the engine itself.

That would be VERY cool, but it probably wouldn't sound as good as the 355 engine. I'm thinking a a twin turbo kit might be sweeter (and cheaper :D)

Has there been suggestion or evidence that the 355 did not develop the advertised horsepower? I don't remember reading that or hearing about it but I haven't followed all the 355 tests/articles. If you can gain about 30hp only putting Webers on a 328 I would think you could gain a fair bit more increasing engine size slightly, raising the redline, installing an individual throttle body for each cylinder and probably increasing breathing further by having 5 valves per cylinder (and maybe higher compression too.... not sure) as was done on the 355.

Funny you should mention a TT kit. I contacted Jason Heffner about TT'ing my 355 and he said he wasn't interested in the project. Shoot. :(

The oil drain back configuration is different on the 355 engine than on the 348 if you have a parts book for both that is the easiest way to see the difference.
I was always under the impression(what I had read when the engine was developed) that the 5 valve concept contributed to quite a bit of the 75 or so HP difference difference between the 2. Not until the 430 engine did different techno replace the 5 with 4 valves.
