Any idea where i can find the chrome cap where the center badge is glued on? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Did someone (not factory) make it? I think you have a Nardi. Search for center horn caps. I found a few, but nothing exact. Does anybody know the story of this car? It was sold for just USD 225'000 which is low although it might need a restoration and the engine was changed once. https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mo19/monterey/lots/r0144-1966-lamborghini-350-gt-by-touring/791910
Nice car, very original throughout, original exhaust and glass, interior and carpets, everything but the seats and never messed with. Body is very straight with zero rust and no corrosion with original paint under a quick respray but no sign any of metal work or collision repair. Ran well but needs a valve job as it blew heavy smoke on the left side, it would take very little to bring it up to a very good driver car. Engine is a 1968 4 liter motor and according to records was never assigned to a car and was a factory engine replacement. It was an outlier price well below market but everything was going for at least a 30% discount and many case 1/2 price for the classic cars.
Again these cars NEED to be broken up into two categories. The aluminum and steel body cars. This was steel and the car needs full resto and had an engine change. After $300k+ for a proper resto you will be in this car for $650k all in. Not really a bargin IMHO.
According to the auction house the car originally had a 3.5 liter engine. As a consequence it must have an aluminium body. Only the so called "interims" have a steel body and a 4 litre engine. In addition they are very rare, only a bit more than 20 were produced. Maybe the description of the auction house is not correct...
Thank you Rambo..... Indeed it is an aluminum body car fully intact. There is documentation that the car received a factory supplied engine. So it does not have a motor out of an Espada or Jarama or something like that. I am looking further into the history of the car.
Yes, ferrucio didnt sell enough cars to be profitable enough to make the finals in Aluminum. Then needed to add two rear seats for tax reasons....... Was an expensive car to make those 350GT cars. Im not sure what chassis they flipped into steel. I wonder if those buying them in period knew?
Are you certain? Ive never seen a 400 serial number with an Aluminum body.... have a magnet test photo to confirm? I am positive RM would have touted its Aluminum body. They always include it or exclude that in the description.
Thank you Lel and rmolke, I wasn't aware of that. Always thought only the interims received the steel body. Do you know how many of the 350s were fitted with a steel body?
Thats why the interim cars are so hard to define. Certainly the 350GT as designed and originally built was top of the line with a touring aluminum body. I have never seen any records and I dont think they exist but would also love to know for sure how many are in fact aluminum.
incorrect : 3.5 liters engine doesn't lead only to aluminium body... I have expertised many 350 GT, about 42 cars, half of them has aluminium body, the balance has steel body… I still try to clarify when the change was made, knowing that few aluminium were still built at the end of the production, several explanations came to the surface. It is not true that the 400 GT or so called Interim has only steel body because I inspected few ones with aluminium body… Gary Bobileff also restored few with aluminium body. The production of 400 GT/Interim was published in Rob de la Rive Box book : 23x made, but few mistakes occur in that publication… I know what I'm speaking about because I owned his original letters/correspondance exchanged with the factory… that I crossed/checked with others period documents. 400 GT/Interim are distinguishable from 350 GT and 400 Gt 2+2 by : * 350 GT body * only 2 seats * original fitting on production line of the 4 liters V12 engine
Olivier, It would seem that some 400GT/Interims, but not all, had modified chassis for mounting the new Lamborghini differential instead of the Salisbury unit. In your experience how many had the modified chassis ? Also, in addition to changing from 350 to 400 engine, they were changing over to Lamborghini produced gearbox at that time. Maybe there should be an Ultimate Interim category : * 350 GT body * only 2 seats * original fitting of 4 litre engine * modified chassis with Lamborghini differential fitted * Lamborghini gearbox originally fitted instead of ZF unit Any idea how many in that category ? Thanks.
It is not the way to differentiate/identify 400 GT/Interim , I have seen 7x with modified chassis… out of 17 that I have inspected… The gearbox and the chassis are not part of the distinctions, sorry ! Then, you could also add the twin wipers or single...
Thanks Olivier, good to have your experience of the modified chassis. Was not suggesting that the modified chassis for fitting Lamborghini differential is part of Interim definition. But it is very interesting to note that from the small number of Interims built, there is such a small number of those with Lambo differential, and probably an even smaller number of that group which were also fitted with Lambo gearbox. Resulting in a very select group of cars fitted with the latest development of all three major units of 400 engine, plus Lambo manufactured gearbox and differential, before production of 400GT 2+2 began.
Thank you Oliver I wanted to add a few data points. Upon inspection of #0400 -basically a barn find completely original car. Untouched with 34,000 miles It is an aluminum body car 350 gt badged 350 body 2 seats Lamborghini transmission modified chassis with Lamborghini differential Wondering if this car is the prototype for the transmission / differential upgrade, did this show up on earlier chassis?
the 1st prototype for the development was #0265... ZF + Salisbury but with the 1st 4 liters engine… and it is not an Interim… because it was born with 3.5 liters engine
#1339 is full matching Numbers and has an original Borletti A/C... enough rare to mention it… rear suspension seems a bit too lower to my taste Image Unavailable, Please Login
