After adjusting the valves on my '61 3500 #101 1512, I noticed that the front crank pulley, or harmonic dampner seems loose on the snout of the crankshaft. I can see through an access hole on the pulley that the castle nut, and split/cotter pin are secure, yet the pulley has some slop, as if the key way was worn. I actually have a spare dampner, but I believe it to be from a newer, fuel injected car, as it has a slightly different pulley hub, and half of is appears to be rubber, or at least rubber coated.
I'm wondering if these are interchangable? I'm currently not running the front mounted scavenger oil pump, nor a thermostat for that matter. Been this way for many miles, and many years! But I'm wondering if I can just swap out these harmonic dampners, and hopefully a new key will solve this problem? If so, I'd like to at least get the spare dampner rebuilt, so there isn't any down time. Any suggestions on where to get that done?

    Many Thanks, RF.

I think either would work. But which ever you use should be rebuilt so it really works as a crankshaft damper. The rubber needs to be new or replaced with a modern elastomer. There should be several people in the bay area that can do this for you. Look at hot rod shops

I only saw on eBay (in Germany) for about $1,000 including shipping. Using the Damper Doctor seems to be the least expensive solution and that way I will know the part will fit when I get it back. We have all experienced that new parts are sometimes just different enough to make fitting really hard or impossible.

It was about 10 years ago if I am remembering it correctly.

I used "Dale Manufacturing Company" in Salem Oregon. Their specialty was Harmonic Ballancer Rebuilding. Found them in Hemming Motor News.

Hope this helps. Image Unavailable, Please Login

You can also buy a brand new one from Cicognani, an Italian rubber supplier for vintage cars, and they have a distributor the US so you can buy it locally from Motion Products Inc.
