New pix of engine...getting closer! This car is going to be awesome when done. I chose non-standard red crinkle paint for the top of the engine and a few parts. The Webers intakes will be chromed. The exhaust manifold is coated with heat resistant material (forget the name). I'll paint her "albany" (silver), the original was white apparently...but I don't like white on these cars. The interior will be all black leather of course, when it come to that part of restoration. Of course I'll post pix along the way. Should have the body/chassis back in just over a month to put in mechanicals. With this recession there are plenty of workers available for this project...it is flying along, going very smoothely thus far. Hi Rob, ...eh...sorry - but I can`t agree with a silver painted engine with red valve covers with a Maserati! Looks a little like a Drag Queen for me! And silver is a rather common color for the car. White should make this great 3500 GT "molto speciale"! Its also a very 50ies color - and thats the period it rolled fresh out of the Factory gates! Ciao! Walter
...eh...to each his own... I think engine looks great. It would be simple for a future owner to change cam covers back to black...take an afternoon to do it...so won't hurt value. Flat white on a 3500GT?...looks like milktoast crapolla to me. This car below is perfection...that is what mine will look like! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Walter, my old 3500GTI was an off white, closer to Ivory, and turned a lot of heads as well as won a number of trophys. I've always liked that color, especially with red leather interior. Larry Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

Larry was the color of your 3500 BIANCO POLO? In my opinion it looks the 3500 look stunning in white. Especially in person! A wonderful car you had! Best regards! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Huhuuuu...early series I-car in white! Fantastico! Love that color on a 3500 GT! Some years ago I saw a Spyder Vignale in Ivory with black leather - GREAT! Ciao! Walter Ciao! Walter
Walter (and others)... I'm thinking of going with white...but these whites look kind of boring and flat to me. Is there another white I can use that would still be somewhat "correct" but have more depth than just flat white? Thanks.
Take an ivory instead! It would make the car always special...! Flat white is a little boring, I agree. Ciao! Walter
Thanks...can you recommend a great ivory color, one that has some "depth" some "creaminess" to it? Didn't Mercedes have such a color in the 1950s? Thanks as always.
Yep, Mercees had that color. But there is -perhaps- a better option: Ferrari offers since 2 or 3 years the old 50ies/60ies-colors for their new cars and they have a very creamy ivory in that programm. Try your next Ferrari-dealer and ask for the color-catalogue and/or paint-plates. Ciao! Walter
What do you think about using the modern Bianco Fuji, Pearl White, on a 1959? It is a stunning color on my '06 GS.
My 1959 Vignale spyder was white and I am also looking around for a good shade of white to paint the car. I think a creamy white would look very good. Check out the next Jaguar concourse in your area and look at the Olde English white used on the XK140/XK150 of that era. Great color when the paint is properly applied. Ivan
Yep, thats a nice ivory-white! Silver is always nice - but veeeery common (....though whatever anyone else says!) Ciao! Walter
I spoke with the guy who did the restoration on that "Ferrari" pictured above... It is a Dupont White...Dupont YS389 from Spectrum Master collection
The 2002 Eldorado Collector Edition's "Alpine White" paint was an attempt to reproduce the original 1953 paint tone. It is a creamy ivory that is most attractive and unusual. Don't know the paint code, but the (special order GM) touchup tube is labeled #12346591 Code 45 WA 409 F Cream White Metallic Here is one currently on Craigslist that shows some of the tonal variation from off-white to lemonish... http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/ctd/1504086905.html
Gonna try to Dupont white on the "Ferrari 166MM." Should be primed and ready for mechanicals in a few weeks. The economy and lack of work for the body guys has been atremendous boon for me, the car is getting worked on every day by a couple guys who know what they are doing and the project is moving along (so far..touch wood) really well. I'll post new pix once back in the shop for engine installation.
What is the Dupont paint code? Will you be using single stage poly, or base coat with clear, or ??? Ivan
Walter, I just ran across 3500 #101.1810. It is a major restoration project. What information do yoou have in your data base for it? Thanks,
