Thanks for the help guys. I have been searching for a couple hours and the only one that I can find is for the Ferrari...it appears the old Ferrari's used the same one. I will call the place in LA tomorrow...thanks.

Did you have luck finding the correct braided water hoses? I need to find braided hoses for both fuel and water.

Ruud, thanks. That should be a little less expensive than the Ferrari version.
Ivan, I posted the info on your thread.

It's really coming along. What did you end up doing with the wheels?

Hi Ray, thanks. I cleaned the wheels with my pressure washer, used steel wool & wax on the painted areas, and polished the alloy. I was able to preserve the original Boranni stickers. I would love to refinish the wheels and hubcaps to look like new, but I fear that I have already gone too far by painting/detailing the underside and engine compartment areas.

Were you able to find someone to straighten out the hubcaps? I'd love to see some pics of the wheels.

I was finally able to resolve my starter issue. Holley Generator, in Sacramento, was able to modify a new Bosch solenoid to fit my original Marelli starter ($129). They also inspected the starter and told me that it worked perfect (it did not need rebuilt). My new heat shield even fits over the new solenoid.

I accidentally splattered some brake cleaner on my paint ,while I was cleaning the engine and suspension. I had to wet sand the entire car. I used Meguire's three step system to bring back the shine (along with a Porter Cable polisher). The paint looks pretty amazing for over 50 years old.

Thanks to Ivan, I have enough Cheney clamps to connect all of my hoses. I should be able to start the car this week. I need some advice on a few matters....I would appreciate any help you guys could give me:

    - what spark plugs should I use?
    - what oil?
    - what anti freeze?
    - where do I get the correct battery...was it a Magnetti Marelli battery?
    - can someone please post a photo of the back of the generator (I forgot to mark the wires)?
    - where do you route the driver's side heater hose, so it does not get near the exhaust manifold?
    - does anybody have a source for the gas tank sensor gasket or did you have to fabricate it?

    Thanks for the help.

Thanks Pete. It still has plenty of "patina".

Today, I was able to get the starter & heat shield installed. In order to use the Bosch solenoid, I had to solder a connector onto the small positive wire and put a little bit of rubber two sided tape on the heat shield (to protect the large positive wire from grounding). I also reinstalled the vacuum boost and vacuum canister. I will need to order a couple of the crush washers from MIE to complete the installation.

I answered most of my own questions today. MIE is sending me Bosch WR5DC plugs. They recommend Valvoline 20-50w oil or 50w for competition. The car used a Marelli battery...I will have to do more research to find a replica. I located the correct Koni shocks 821019 & 821255 at Summit Racing for a reasonable price.

Valvoline racing oil is used by many because of its relatively high level of ZDDP, an anti-wear additive important for older engines but detrimental to catalysts. Unfortunately it has low detergency. I use Brad Penn oil in all my vintage cars, for which it is expressly formulated. It is very similar to the old Kendall "green" oil, as it is made from Pennsylvania stock in the same refinery.

Generally your best solution for the battery is to find a modern maintenance-free with black case in the correct size, then peel off the labels. You can buy Marelli stickers from Bill Gillham, whose contact information can be found on Alfa forums (or send me a PM).

Did you car come with Konis? My car had RIV on the front and Girling on the rear. It probably rides better with the Konis.

Don, thanks for the information on the appropriate oil and the battery solution. I appreciate it. After doing some more research, I have decided to just buy an Optima battery, so I don't have to worry about acid damage. I am using a Holley fuel pump, even though I have the originals. My fuel pump is covered by a panel, as is the battery....I guess that I am leaning more toward function over form at this point.

Ivan, my car did not originally come with Konis. My shocks appear to be identical to yours. I will keep the originals, clean them up, and put them in a box next to my beautiful original fuel pumps & filter. Like the stainless steel exhaust system, I am hoping the Konis are an improvement over the originals. Are there any tires that you would recommend that are an improvement over the originals? I have four Pirelli Cinturato tires (185 SR16) on my car that look like new, but are at least thirty years old. My spare is a Continental (600R16). I can't imagine the current tires would be safe for anything other than a drive around the block.

How do you like the Brad Penn oils? I have been thinking of changing from straight Valvoline 50 to the Brad Penn 50W oil.
It would be nice to add a detergent to keep things clean. Any suggestions?

    Hi Frank,
I'm used to dealing with older engines from the '40s & '50s that have never been rebuild, however, I believe our era engines; late '50s, - early '60 fall into the same category for this subject. These engines were produced & run in an era when there really wasn't any detergent oils, so have built up a sludge, or film inside. The sudden introduction of a detergent oil may dislodge, or disturb this layer too abruptly, and cause some debris to contaminate things, or even clog some orffices.
On my own 3500, which I believe has more miles on it than yours (sure looks it anyway, at 51,000K or so) I try and change the oil a little more frequent than usual, and I use the Valvoline Racing 50wt. It is also important to try and NOT let the formation of sludge continue, or grow, by using the car at least once a week through a complete heat cycle of 10 miles or more. This helps get rid of any condensation inside.
I don't like using detergent oils in old, original engines that have never been rebuilt. If you are the rebuilder however, then I always break an engine in with non-detergent (the first 2 or 3 oil changes; which are very, frequent in this early period), then I swap over to modern oils, accounting for zinc if needed.

When I purchased my tires, my car wasn't running yet, and I still didn't know how much of a project it was going to be. The car was on it's original tires and wheels, which required re-airing weekly, and left a black powdery dust where ever it rolled! I needed new tires, just to move this project around!
Since the car was un-proven, and not running, I didn't want to invest in the most expensive tire, just in case my project turned into a long-term one. So I opted for the middle of the road, and purchased the Allstates (I think that's what they are...........w/o going down and checking). They look the part, and are the correct size, but to me, they don't handle as well as I would expect. I am noticing some premature tread wear all the way around also.
Next time I will step up a notch with my tires.
