Can anyone tell me when the 3500GT changed over to having a tail pipe either side?
I have the option of both and would like to keep it correct for the year.

    Thanks in anticipation.

As far as I know, since I've done the same research for my car, the change was made at the end of 1962.
I know very well car # 101-2324 (built in July '62) and I can state that it still have its old original factory double pipe on the back left side.
My car (101-2574 of February '63), on the contrary, had originally the tail pipe either side, as Mr. Cozza stated to me, and so I restored it.

    Ciao

As a guess, and only a guess, I would say they changed to a transverse muffler when the interior was changed to bucket type seats and the 5 speed transmission.

Frank, the change You say was made in 1961.
There are many '62 cars (GT and GTI too) still fitting the old double exhaust on the left, as it was in origin.

Of course it's equally frequent to see many cars earlier than '62, showing the new exhaust type, but I'm sure it isn't the original equipment.

    Ciao

We must always remember that the changes were NOT made in model years, or on Jan 1 of a particular year, but that changes were made as the cars were built, from day to day.

    I agree with You.
Maserati was just an artisan company, totally different from a Fiat, Daimler Benz or GM.

I've been told (Orsi dixit) that sometimes, the guys of the production line, have mounted some different parts on the cars, because there wasn't availability of the planned ones.

In other words, we can say that the availability of the old exhaust system expired around the end of 1962, more or less when Maserati decided to fit a different type on the 3500.

    Ciao

So looks like I could fit the later system that came with the car and be considered correct.
Thanks for the offer Dalin, please send the scan, it could go either way.
Meanwhile I press on sorting the wiring loom, five days and counting.

This print depicts my exact system on my '61 3500 AM101 1512, which is pretty much a very correct, original barn find example. I never did understand the exhaust system splitting up into pairs, only to regroup back into a single pipe.

    Fred,
Does your car have the engine bay extraction fan fitted behind the left hand wing vent?
I have still been unsuccessful in finding how this is positioned.
