Hi Everyone - I am wondering if anyone knows how 3500GTs were painted in the factory originally: What was painted on the chassis before the outer skin was fitted? A black underseal of some kind? Was the inner surface of the alloy body painted with anything? I presume the final color was applied once the alloy was fitted (including doors)...? It would be great to know the sequence of painting so I can recreate it in my rebuild of 101.1142... Trying to be as accurate as possible with the rebuild.. Guy
Guy, if you scan through my Barnfind post, you will see many of the original finishes. The insides of the alloy body were left bare (not the underside). The frame had red oxide primer on it in places (such as the interior...under the headliner and behind the back seats). The doors appear to have been painted off the car...you can not replace the front door seal without removing the doors. The undercoating is unique. I kept mine original. I do not know how it can be duplicated. Good luck and please post pictures. If you check out posts by Frank and Ivan (thecarnut and Potenos), you will see great examples of original cars.
