My ’97 355 ABS light decided to stay on today. Took the car out for a nice drive now that spring temporarily arrived here in MA. Car ran super but the ABS light never turned off.
Took the car to a sandy parking lot to test system function. No ABS.
My 355 must be an early '97 model because I have the ATE Teves system, not the later Bosch ABS. Date of manufacture Nov. '96.
Pulled the inner luggage liner to test for ABS codes. Installed a 10 amp fuse in the test slot. Turned on ignition to pull the codes as I had successfully done on my 348 with the same system. No codes. Light stays solid.
Brake system bled approximately 500 miles ago. No issues noted.
    System brake reservoir is full.
ABS pressure pump appears to run and stop when it pressurizes.
The difference may be the 5.2 OBDII system.
    My question:
Can I pull the codes or do I need to access an SD1 or SD2 diagnostic machine?
As always, thank you for the help.

You are describing the behavior that you get if you leave a 10 amp fuse *in* the diagnostic trouble code fuse slot!

On the Teves ABS system you get out the codes as described in the manual. No SD1/SD2 necessary. But as No Doubt wrote you will have to remove the fuse from the socket again. The system just needs a 'trigger' to send out the codes.

Thank you. I am a bit confused.
My 348 with the same system experienced ABS issues. Lightning may indeed strike twice!
To test the system on the 348 I would install a 10 amp fuse in the test slot with the ignition off. Turn the ignition on, not start, and the light would flash the fault code.
I used this same procedure to pull the codes in my 355 and the light does not flash. Stays solid.
The early(OBD1) 355 manual procedure is as described above.
The later 355(OBDII) manual specifies ABS codes should be pulled using an SD1 or SD2 machine. But I am not sure if this is for both the ATE Teves system and the Bosch system or just the later Bosch system.
    Thank you again.

The BMW guys have the Teves (Mark IV, I believe) ABS, and they get the ABS light "always on" condition either with a bad ABS relay or with failed internal ribbon wiring in the hydraulic actuator assembly (solenoid valve block section), which turns out to be user-repairable: http://www.staffordnet.net/repairs/bmw/abs_pump_rewire.htm

See "before" and "After" pics below, plus see this part in the schematic:
