Ok.....can anyone give me a strong technical background on the air injection system? What is its purpose overall aside from any impact that it may have on the emissions levels. I have searched high and low with no technical support for its need to be.

Why do I ask this? Because my speedshop is developing a new exhaust system from headers to tail pipe tip and I'd love to eliminate the air injection system in its entirety. Be gone you AIS and gold-plated cross-over valve!

    Thanks guys.

I am not a car technician, but my understanding of air injection is that it is emissions-related. The air is added to the exhaust to allow/speed burning of any unburnt fuel and or partial-burn byproducts. If emissions not an issue, you can delete the system.

Happy to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable. Good luck with the exhaust system.

Tried to edit but was unsuccessful... I wanted to add that the fuel injection system may be tied into the air/exhaust system. Dave Helms or Brian Crall could answer that question more accurately.

    Good luck Bob,

Fuel quits burning when the O2 runs out particularly when the motor is cold. Air injection adds air to allow it to complete the burn for cleaner exhaust.

    No other function.

The system is for cold start emissions. It introduces air at the exit of the exhaust port, making the flame hotter in an attempt to burn off any unburnt fuel. This function takes place during warm up.

On the F355 Challenge series cars we eliminated the entire system.

THESE are the answers I was expecting. All correct from the data I have been able to collect. That's a big help guys. I hope I can at some point return some knowledge or quite possibly in the very near future an entirely new and "functional" exhaust system for 355 enthusiasts once we have a product that engineered properly. Stay tuned......pun intended.:)
