So... I've decided to replace my brakes and clean everything up on a 355. It's super dirty, brake dust everywhere and figure while I'm at it I may get some parts powder-coated to look pretty if I'm going through this work. I also have a friend who has a big powder coating business, so that helps. Problem... I'm trying to take everything apart and am running into a problem removing the big giant nut as seen in the photo. Seems once it's removed everything should come apart nicely. What's the secret? I've already taken a little punch and tapped the nut so it doesn't have the crimps in it to prevent it spinning loose. Seems I've done that OK... but maybe not good enough.

I am not seeing a photo, but an impact should spin it off no problem.

No photo is displaying. Anywways, that nut is torqued to 200 ft. lbs. You will need a serious breaker bar or impact gun to loosen it.

somehow I'm maxed out on my quota for uploading photos. First time I've ever seen that. Cant seem to figure out how to get rid of some of them so I can upload more. BUt you guys hit it on the head, it is a tough nut to crack. I've use my jacks 4ft long handle trying to get some leverage, but to NO avail. I've soaked it with WD40 which I have handy, and letting it soak overnight. See what happens in the morning. I can try a impact, but the one I have doesn't seem to be industrial enough... I need one that is part jack-hammer. You should have seen my 4ft. long leverage handle bending with the pressure I was putting on it. It's not revers threads, is it? I kinda doubt it.

It is NOT reverse or "left hand" thread. I've never had an axle nut give that much trouble, I'll be curious to hear how difficult it is to knock the half shaft out of the hub afterwards.

Sounds as though you had some rust buildup here, may need to apply heat to help things expand and free up.

That's crazy your using a 4ft handle and still can't get it loose.

You cannot upload pictures because you are not subscribed, a member. It is a good investment..

I recommend an Ingersol Rand impact gun. About $125 but very well worth it. At 125 psi and with a good impact socket, my IR gun has never failed me.

Got it off finally. I've posted many many photos over the years.
But now when I try to post one it say my quota is filled.... or
something to that effect. I have the feeling somehow I might be
able to delete photos that I've previously posted. I've seen that
happen on other websites. Just delete photos & clear more room.
Unless my membership expired. But seems like I remember paying
a few months ago. Oh well, the nut has been removed, I'm a happy
    camper. Thanks much.

I just borrowed my Porsche mechanics Snap-on. 450 lbs of torque.. the nuts flew off. Also applied a bit of AeroKroil Oil. That stuff will remove anything.
