    A couple of 355 questions

    1. Has anyone installed an Optima battery in their 355? If so, what model, and are there any fitting or securing issues?

    2. I just put a Tubi on, and am now more aware of a buzzing sound at idle, and just above; and other times when the engine is not pulling. With the stock exhaust, the sound was a little more hidden in the higher pitch of the exhaust. Is this likely to be the exhaust bypass valve, or is there another likely culprit? So far, I haven't been able to localize the sound to the exhaust bypass valve area (or any other).

    Thanks for any input/thoughts.

I use the optima Red Top (I don't remember - but I think it was the 600 Cold Cranking Amp - Since I would have to remove the darn right tire to check - that is all I can remember :) There is plenty of room for many types - you will not have a problem fitting it - I think the original is 600 Cranking Amps - your manual will tell you - so just buy the battery with those specs. When I was putting mine it - I don't remember any space or fastening issues at all.. Just having to remove the passenger right front tire - then the panel to get to it... It is so fun trying to get a jack under the car to lift it - mine is lowered about 1.25 inches - had to have a buddy help me lift the car to slide the jack under ... Ugghhh..

When you hear the buzzing sound - is it the pump at start up - which lasts about 2 minutes or so then goes away... Or are you just hearing the Air Intakes sucking air..

Others will know for sure - but I think the exhaust/cat bypass is only at high speed/rpms - so I am not sure this would be what you are hearing...

If you yell real loud for one of the tech consultants - they should be able to guide you better... :)

Mike - If it's a "whine" - high pitch coming from the right rear part of the engine and only on cold start up then it's the air pump (normal). Goes away after 2-3 minutes. A Bypass will "rattle"...sounds like metal shaking or "clanging". Please give more info... and is constant or on start up.

Richard - Quick Trick. If you want to jack up the front end, get a cheap scissor type jack (Pep Boy, Auto Zone, etc). Put the scissor jack on the oppostie end of where you want to jack (rear jacking point) and start raising the car. As the rear goes up, so will the front. Now you can place a good hydralic jack under the front lifting point and jack up the car..

Just in case you have to lift your car and you buddy is not around to help...
    :)

I had a new Optima in a 355 and found it marginal. These cars ( some more than others) tend to be hard on batteries ( that is they pull the charge down if not used every 2 weeks or so) less if the battery is marginal. I'm happier with the biggest and best lead/acid battery I can get. Sears premium is ok and I think the best Interstas are ok to. I don't have a real favorite unless I can get one thats labled for RV or Marine use.....these are much better in my experience. Bottom line....I'd pass on the smallish Optima for your 355.

Thanks to all for the input. The rattling sound seems to have gone down a little from the other day, but is still quite noticeable. If I were to characterize the sound, if I were told that the screen on the deck lid was prone to rattle, then I could have believed that was the sound. Sort of a relatively high-pitched buzz/rattle of a type that could be conceived of as coming from a rattling screen. Unfortunately, when the rear lid is up, I still hear it soundling like it's coming from the engine compartment, though it's been hard to localize.

A definite buzz/rattle. With more time with it, it seems to be most pronounced at about 2,500 rpm, either going up, or coming down, though it does kick in at times at idle or particularly just above.

I saw the post earlier today, and the suggestions re heat shields seem like they might be applicable to this issue.

    Thanks again for any thoughts.

I have a rattle that I'm told is the exhaust bypass valve. Apparently it not worth changing as the new ones rattle too!! My rattle comes in at certain RPM too due to resonance fequencies
