I tried Paypal a couple of times and never got anywhere because they wanted a code from my charge card ... that would only appear on my next billing cycle. All Iwas trying to buy was a $30 item and I would have had to wait ~ 3 - 4 weeks for my card to turn up.

Instruction sheet ... sure ... it's easy but I'll include one.

I put the switches back in tonight ... they look great .. even if I do say so myself!

Just a quick question... Is the piece you had made a cover or do you take the complete cover off the old one. If I understand correctly this is a replacement cover that goes over the current bubbly unit. If so what are you planning on using to attach it to the old unit. I cant wait to see the pictures of it in your car. I will probably get one also.

    Thanks, Ryan

    Ryan,

I think that in the majority of cases the bubbles are too extensive just to cover up. It was certainly so in my case. This replacement piece is simply a piece of Lexon (plastic about the thickness of a playing card) with the decals printed on it.... 'silk screened'. I took out the unit that has the bubbles on .. dead easy ... one screw and the whole thing comes out. I then took a Stanley blade and literally cut the old bubbling piece off... I ran the blade around the outside of the rectangle, then lifted the bubbling bit off. My came off very easily. The Lexon bit just sticks back on the unit. It comes already glued with a peel off backing .. so all you do is peel of the back ... take CAREFUL aim .. and stick it on. I reckon the whole thing will take 30 minutes to do and that's being real careful.

I know a few people are nervous about taking a blade to their loved one ... maybe I shoud rephrase that!

I'll post a bunch of pictures and it'll be very obvious.

Gluing it directly over the bubbling piece actually wont work. The decals are illuinated from behind ..and with the bubbles etc, it's very very unlikely you could line up all the transparent decals. Believe me .. taking the unit out .. cutting of the old bit and sticking the new bit is easy.

    Regards,

    Pete

Pete you really are the man...my hats off to you for taking the imitative to resolve this pain in the butt...we'll show Ferrari some good ol yankee know how.

I'm also going to do door handles, etc. You mentioned flat black paint. I thought satin would be closer, but will trust your judgment. Griot's has some special satin paint made in Germany and he claims it's for dash and parts of engine detailing. I might try a test piece to compare.

I was also thinking of using 3M Multipurpose Adhesive cleaner for removal...use it on the boat all the time and stuff is killer.

Anyway, when I do the entire car I'll take pix - step by step - and post the process here. Hope others do the same so we can all go through the learning curve together.

    Can't wait to get started!

Michael ... I did use the SATIN paint on the door handles. I used the MATT on the switches themselves ...... and used SATIN on the pieces of plastic that hold the switches.

I've attached some pictures of the 'painting' I've been doing. The center console picture shows a OLD trial Lexon piece and it's not properly attached .... I'm waiting for the screen printed ones which will stick down flat. You can see from one of the pics. that i actually scalp the old bubbling bit off the top of the unit. The switches were real bad ... did those today. Also shown is the finished plastic bit that holds the bank of switches next to the gear stick.

Pete - Thnx for the pix...

    1. The front switches look easy. Unscrew the 4 screws at the gate shifter and the panel comes off...switches look like you pull stright up to remove. BTW-old trick-on the little illuminated area-put some vasoline on it, then paint. When dry wipe down and paint will not stick to vasoline.

    2. Consol - it looks like the lexon piece rests on the 4 corners, is that correct. It looks like a table top and the actual point where it comes into contact with the consol is on the four corners. I ask this because when it comes to cutting out the old one you have to make sure you don't cut through the corners...otherwise the new piece will not have anything to rest on. Can you comment?

    3. How do you remove the center unit? On old f-chat I thought someone said it snaps out (no screws)...did a search and came out empty.

    Morning Frank ...

The Lexon piece actually lies totally flat. It looks like its on four corners in the picture becasue it's slightly bowed, and I haven't glued it down. The piece you're looking at is actually one of the early trial pieces .. I placed it there just to give people a general idea of how it looks.

Dismantling the center piece is easy.

In the ashtray there is a coin holder. Look in it ... there's a small screw at the base. Unscrew this .... and you're done!

Everything ... everything .. just lifts out ... no more screws. All the plastic pieces are interlocked. All that connects the pieces now are the wiring harnesses.

Thanks for the tip on the vaseline ... I actually used little bits of masking tape. As you can see, some of the switches were in real bad shape. I literally couldn't touch them without getting black goo on my hands.

I found one last place to do on the car ... the plate that holes the center gauges ... should be easy.

My last nighmare is the shrinking dash ... that's going to take time.

    Regards,

    Pete

If anyone has an old unit or faceplate they could send me I'd appreciate it. I want to look at the viability of having it made in aluminum. Not just a plate but the whole cover. Just PM or email me... I could return it back to you when done.

    Thanks

    Thanks...piece of cake.

Dash - Me too. But look at it this way. Once you take care of the bubbling center consol, the shrinking dash and bolt on some decent headers you will have one hell of a nice exotic that can be driven daily and you never have to deal with these issues again.

Sorry Todd, was busy detailing the GT4 over the weekend :) Fresh carnuba and Lexol'd the interior and a long drive up and down PCH here is SoCal. Saw two 360's while we were cruising thru Del Mar. Doug Roberts needs for someone to supply some parts that need to be CF so that molds can be made. Gotta walk first before we can run here---gotta have enough interested parties for this production run to occur. 30-40 at least.
