Maybe it is about weight reduction as much (or less?) as heat dissipation....

I thought there were openings in the under tray that fed air to the engine bay. No?

That photo is wrong regarding drag, Bob. Just the opposite. My senior engineering project was to design and build a race car wing. They do almost nothing if small and not at very high speeds. You need a large wing, high speed to over come the drag they create.

    A) If you think the bump on the rear deck is anything but cosmetic.....

    B) With a challenge grill, air is either going to go out or into the engine bay through. Either way, it will aid cooling as it will increase air motions. I don't have a clue about by how much and honesty, I don't care.

    C) Weight? Put the drive on a diet. :)

    D) I'm going out to play tennis. Tennis played have balls!

You need 1 more NACA duct to cool the alternator and 2 possibly 4 more for brake cooling in the rear :)

I would take two things away from this.

    1. If there is air moving into the engine bay then having a challenge grill provides more air flow than the solid one. How much more? We can argue that all day.

    2. The post DrBob had shows "drag". In essence the low pressure it creates is a vacuum behind the car. With a challenge grill, air will be pulled through the grill into the vacuum (drag as noted) and create additional airflow....and reduce drag in the process.

In either case, clearly there is improved airflow to the engine bay.

LOL Watson..I was told that picture is incorrect. :)

    I will add #3

    3. The car looks much better without a challenge grill.

Well if the picture is incorrect....then #2 certainly isn't valid! :)

I would think the airflow off the rear deck lid and the under body would create a low pressure area. Kind of like ice on a wing only in a much larger scale.

I thought we were discussing the cooling effect....

As for aesthetics? Who cares about that....buy what you like.

Incorrect from the purpose of drag related to the rear spoiler, not the pressure change as John noted. ;)

I am speaking tongue in cheek about the aesthetics. To each his own. I prefer painted

In no way do I think that aero pic is wrong just because someone on here says so. I'll post the whole article that came from but I believe it is a credible analysis of auto aero dynamics if there is indeed a negative air pressure created off the rear of the car then that would be helpful in drawing heat out through the minimal openings of the challenge grill. I do believe and have read about the trunk lips reducing drag which is why you see them on so many non performance cars.

I'm sure the calculator I posted with surface area msmts is faulty and my analysis of it was wrong as well. But it looks like 5 3x4 openings that are less than 25% open allowing minimal air escape to me

The fact that the fan duct output doesn't flow into the engine bay is inconsequential.

The conventional wisdom thinks the obvious. I disagree.

I wish I had as much time as you two to spend debating the merits of perforated metal to dissipate heat from an engine bay... you guys are both nuts. lol

Bruce, not trying to stir the post but......was working on the car tonight and the side inlets / exhaust fan outlets DO flow thru the engine bay. Pics are not well lit but you can see the full fan in the engine bay

    Hi guys,

I have a oem Challenge grill for a 355 for sale. I purchased through Eurospares.

I bought this for installing on our 355 but before the product came we traded the car in for a F430 so we have no use for the grill..

I also have fabspeed sport exhaust, xpipe supersport.

Both are brand new in box.

Willing to negotiate for best price.

Please email me [email protected] if interested thanks!

Can anyone post some close ups of where the tail light recess's were stamped.

I am wondering if you have what I have. Ill post some pictures of mine.
Just trying to see if mine is a factory piece or a repop.

Anything on your factory piece Dave that would be seen like a part number on the part?

    thanks
    johnny
