Hi. Pulled a few codes off my '95 355 Spider. 1-4 showed 4112 (stroke sensor) and 4122 (Catalyzer temp too high), 5-8 showed 4112 (stroke sensor). Is this something that can be done without taking it to a shop? Last year I changed both O2 sensors with Ernie's help. Worked out real well for the year. Suggestions appreciated. Thanks. Mike

The cats running hot is not a good situation. I would get some Hyperflows and some fire protection until you get that fixed.

    Mark,
Hyperflows were installed by Ferrari Central New Jersey about a year and a half ago. Put under 500 miles since. I remember Ernie suggesting to get a thermometer to actually test the temp of the cats in the car. Somehow, I don't think that's registering correctly. The Shutdown comes on now and then, but that may be due to the stroke sensor or fouled plugs from disuse? What does a faulty stroke sensor do the the running of the car? Thanks for the help.

First you have to determine if that is a legitimate "overheat" reading or simply an error or fault in the catalyst ECU. 90% of the time, it is a failing/faulty cat ECU. Also, the bad "stroke sensor" could possibly be causing the richness that is causing the overheating catalysts, if they are indeed overheating.

The 4112 "stroke sensor" is also known as the "cam position sensor" so you would want to make sure yours are both plugged in for starters. They are located on the rear portion of each cam bank. Seems wierd both would fail at the same time, that is why I think you should confirm they are plugged in first (the car can run with both failed or disconnected, it just runs off the "baseline" settings in the Motronic ECU in that situation). Since they are off the shelf Bosch parts, you can get the Bosch part number off them and order them online for about 1/3 less than purchasing from a Ferrari dealer. The cat ecu, if indeed is bad, will have to be purchased from a Ferrari parts house, like Ricambi America.

Good luck, but I think you may need some more precise diagnosing from a Ferrari specialist.

    Hugh,
    Thanks for the tips.
Your quote on the bottom reminds me of the reason why Brits drink their beer warm - they have Lucas refrigerators.
I'll check the connections to the stroke sensors and possibly change them. Checking the actual temperature of cats should be helpful also.
    Thanks again.

Though 355 cats can out right fail, usually from the core in the catalyst housing breaking loose and rattling/crumbling apart (crappy Ansa design)...it is rare for them to start overheating. And the overheating is usually related to something upstream, not a fault of the catalyst itself. That is why I think you should start with the 4112 error code first. Once that is resolved, then post back, and we can help tackle the cat ecu code.

(ps, I am NOT an expert Ferrari tech, only a enthusiast owner, so my help must be taken for exactly what you are paying for it...nothing! ;) )

I think once you make it to Hyperflows you eliminate any issue there. Did you have a major service at the same time you did those 500 miles ago? Maybe those two stroke sensors are reversed and since it hasn't been very far it took a while to run through all the cycles for those things to show up. Could just be the connections too. I have been going through all my connectors and cleaning and covering with electric grease. All these connector issues come from the open engine bay that gets rained on and wet every time you wash it. My 456 engine bay looks brand new and all of those connectors are perfect so it must be the rain on the 355 engine.

The major was done at the time the cats were put in. I'll check, clean and grease all the connections first and then move on to changing the stroke sensors if necessary. Thanks guys. Much appreciate the help.

Hey guys, cleaned the contacts thoroughly. Same codes, same problem. Cam sensor, code 4112. both banks. I suspect there's only one cam sensor. Don't see one on the other cam. One of the last posts said it was difficult to believe both cam sensors would go at the same time. Possibly only one cam sensor? Appreciate the help before I go for another $13k with Penske. Can't locate the Bosch part from either Ricambi or Rock Auto even with the part number. Thanks. Mike

As far as I know, you are correct. The only cam sensor on a 1995 F355 is on the back of the right valve cover.

Perhaps you are misreading the codes? blink-blink-pause-pause etc can get confusing.

Also maybe the code chart you (and I) have is wrong and 4112 is not cam sensor for 1995 F355? I have no idea whether or not you could get a cam sensor error from the left bank if there is no cam sensor in place.

You don't say why you have gone looking for trouble...

....I mean looking for trouble codes.

    So you have not mentioned whether or not either of your "slow down" lights were on;

This may be a helpful clue: On the far right of the table I posted, it shows that "4112" will NOT trigger a "slow down 5-8" , or a "slow down 1-4" (aka CEL)

My mistake on the 2.7 Motronic...it has two of everything else. ;) Like idle control motors, MAF, fuel pumps, etc.

Strange, the only codes coming up are 4112 for both 1-4 and 5-8 and code 4122 for 1-4 only. According to the chart, neither of those codes triggers a slowdown, although I find it hard to believe cats getting too hot wouldn't trigger a slowdown. I checked the connections with no success. Next I believe is to replace the cam sensor. Still only see one on the right side of the engine. Any sources for this sensor? Appreciate the help.

I'd just order from Daniel, he is a great guy, and is quick to get orders out. His pricing is typically 10% to up to 25% less than an FNA dealer.
