Hi I have a 35 1996 model which failed the emissions on the high rev range (was asked to rev it at 2000 rpm). Its fitted with a capristo exhaust. Any idea as to how to improve emissions beside the usual clean up of plugs. Car was prepped for a race track in the past but need to make it road legal now. it has about 40000 miles on it. Car was unused for a year and just comissioned it a few weeks ago with regular starts every few days.

Maybe not enough back pressure in exhaust to heat cats sufficiently. Drive the poop out of it on the way to the smog check. I'm no expert!

There are multiple emissions elements that could have caused a fail. NOx will be lean or too hot, CO too rich or cat not working right, not up to temp. It is correct that generally you want the car to be up to full temp before testing. Put on highway for 30 minutes to an hour.

1 - Are the cats oem?
2 - check the bypass valve to make sure it is not open

    Regards, Jim

many thanks everyone, will check cats if OEM or not. I suspect not or maybe modified as the ENGINE SLOWDOWN warning lamp had been removed from the dash panel by prev owner. suspect it could be linked. Does replacing the Capristo with an OEM have a chance of improving anything or does the CAPRISTO just add noise.

The capristo should not effect the emmisions unless the bypass valve has been modified or the cats modified.
