Well as some of you know, I have dropped my engine and rebuilding it. What I would like to to is replace ALL my fluids within the engine. I will only use Redline. Can someone help me with this. I know there are many oil threads here but that is not the purpose of this thread. What I would like to know is what are all the fluids that exist in the car. It is a 6 speed btw. Also I would like to know what the recommended Redline fluids would be for the change. I dont know all the names of them and i dont want to put oil for the gears into the oil tank and vice versa. As far as I know there is

    Coolant
    Engine oil
    Transmission oil
    Clutch
    Power Steering

What else am I missing? By looking at the Redline page I think this is what I would want to use?

Engine oil - 10 WT SAE (0W10) Racing oil

Tranny oil - 75W140NS <--- I am not sure of this fluid. I will need help with this.

Coolant - SuperCool with WaterWetter <--- I dont have confidence in this product. Can anyone vouch for this? Others?

I see clutch oil and power steering fluid by Redline. i will also do this as well.

Any help would be appreciated. I have about a month before I put the engine back. Thanks guys for your help in this.

You want the 75w-90NS for the transaxle fluid.

Clutch is brake fluid, not sure they make a brake fluid.

10w-40 is the closest weight to the factory recommended 5w-40.

I don't believe Redline makes a coolant, just the WaterWetter additive. I would recommend using BMW or Mercedes coolant. (I'm using the BMW stuff)

I have been using Redline stock weight (10w40, I think) for motor oil, so far never have to refill at all within a couple thousand miles between oil change.
Tranny oil, I would recommend MTL, I have uses the Redline stock weight but still too clunky when cold.
And don't forget the brake fluid...??? since you are removing the engine, there is gonna be air in the system. I had to rebleed my brakes twice to get rid of all the air after the 30k.

yes, Rifledriver has said the MTL is recommended if the 75w-90NS does not give good results.

It would be great if Rifledriver could chime in on using a different weight engine oil than Ferrari recommends. Is it OK to use 10w-40 or is 5w-40 the best? Also, I was at Walmart today, and I noticed Mobil 1 5w-40, but it said it was for diesels; is that the same oil that Ferrari recommends, or is 5w-40 for gasoline engines different than 5w-40 for diesels? If it is the same stuff, that's good because I recall reading that the oil Ferrari recommends is expensive, and at Walmart 5w-40 is $21 per 5 quarts.

Because i live in Japan. They try to push all these japanese oils and stuff on me and I know I can get redline here. Maybe in America there is better but I know the company and they are proven oils. These ones here are not. I guess I am sticking with what I know.

Redline does not recommend that coolant for automobiles. I would heed that and not use it for your 355.

Most 355 owners are using the Mobil 1 0w-40. It meets most of the European specs, and being thinner (0w) at cold start up, is not a problem, and can be a good thing.

I hear conflicting things about Mobile1 but I do know it is a very good oil. Can it handle track days?

To back up Dave Handa's thoughts(not that you need to be backed up Dave). I use BMW coolant mixed with distilled water and Redline water wetter. I have used 3 different gears oil all redline but different variaties NS and regular and MTL I didn't really notice a difference on the 2 heavier weights(the 75-90W). The MTL(a little wt.) gives some better shifting but didn't seeem to be that much different. One thing to remember on gears oils (at least Redlines with my experiance) every car seems to be a little different in its reaction to the different type used ie; some like MTL some like NS some like Regular. I have also used Redline 5-30 and 5-40 engine oil in the 355. I prefer the 5-30w(long story) both are fine to use. Redlines P/S fluid is all I have ever used, just seems to give better protection personal thought based on the quality of their other products. Hope that helps. Regards, Vern

P.S. Go to the site Bobistheoilguy.com great site for all engine fluid questions.

My bad, indeed, Redline makes a 5w-40! Use that.

Thank you guys for all your input. So I have concluded that I will go with this setup

    Motor oil - Redline 5w-40

Coolant - BMW coolant / water wetter / distilled water

Tranny oil - Redline MTL <-- hope this is LSD friendly

    P/S fluid - Redline P/S

Can someone tell me how many bottles I will need for each?

Oil would be 6 litters maybe?

    Tranny oil maybe 3 bottles?

    P/S fluid maybe 1 bottle?

coolant maybe water wetter first with a 50/50 distiled water/BMW coolant

These specs are for a 348, but the 355 should be pretty much the same. Do double check your manual though.

    oil = 11lt
    gearbox oil = 4lt
    p/s fluid = sorry don't know 348's don't have power steering
coolant = 20lt (don't forget to drain the block)
    break fluid = 1.6lt

Hi all, can you guys review this. This is the reply redline Japan gave to me.

" Regarding MTL, I would say it's not LSD friendly because almost all kinds of
LSD require GL-5 gear oils. MTL is GL-4 which does not have enough extreme
pressure agents for LSD's heavy loads. We would recommend our Light Weight
Gear oil which is GL-5 75W80 gear oil and is very close to MTL. "

Would you guys concur with this?

    Thank you soooooooooo much

    X-man

It will probably work. There are some individual cars that may have shifting difficulties (synchros sensitive to the "friction modifier"). Not a big deal. If your car does have a problem you can switch to 75w-90ns.

    Hi guys!

Ok, I am down to the final stage and want to run this buy you again. This will also help with searches for others. ;)

    Ferrari Japan told me that

    Engine oil = 9.5 liters / 10.038 537 947 quart [US, liquid]

    Mission Oil = 5 liters / 5.283 441 025 quart [US, liquid]

    Coolant = 11 liters / 11.623 570 255 quart [US, liquid]

    Power Steering = 1.6 liters / 1.690 701 128 quart [US, liquid]

If this looks right to you I will but the order in. What do you think?
