Ok--Stupid question for the guy that owns the registry, I know...What can I say... So where can I find it?? I have looked all over under the bonnet. I have found a stamped number on the passenger side head, but very hard to read and not sure if that is it. Of course I know where the Assembly number is, but I need the engine number.....

Go ahead throw stones at me.....:D

This is great! You made my day 285! I get a warm fuzzy all over when a seasoned veteran like you can ask a basic question. In other words, I don't know where it is either! LOL

Left side head says 'F129' for the engine designation, and a bunch of other codes that don't mean much to me. Assembly # must be the S/N for the engine...but how do you tell if an engine has been replaced? I bet that's one thing that's hard to ID and rarely looked into...

Robbie - On my 348, the workshop manual shows the engine number (and type) being directly below the right induction plenum to the right of the oil filter. However, mine is obscured by throttle linkage, air filter, etc. so I can't see mine right now. There are about 10 ID plates (paint etc) on the car, and these are all shown in the manual. I haven't rec'd the owner's manual yet from the PO on my car (supposed to be sent), but I suspect the 355 would be the same, since they're both basically the same engine. Hope this helps... (PS - it's stamped, not an ID plate).

    Rick

    Robbie...

I've never been able to find the engine number for a 355 by simply peering into the engine compartment. The Assembly Number - while easily spotted - is completely different from the engine number. The easiest way to find the engine number is to look in the service manual - see the picture below.

When you have a major done, you can probably see the engine number, unobstructed, while it's out of the engine bay. While it's out, get the gearbox number and get the numero interno. :)

The assembly number is stamped on a nice metal plate on the drivers side near shock tower, but I was told this is not the engine number...

And that's true... The Assembly Number is the Assembly Number; the engine number is the engine number. The two are completely different. See images below for a 599. The Assembly Number is clearly identifiable; the engine number is a number that's physically stamped into the block.

LOL, I don't have your serial number. :) And if I do, I don't remember your last name and, thus, can't find it.

I have my engine # on the warranty card, but sure as hell can't find it anywhere on the engine. Maybe if it wasn't 28F in my garage I'd look harder!

Its under the oil filter base, stamped on a pad (RH side of filter) on the engine block. The # starts with F129(a letter next, mine is C) then your #, mine is 45575. Check your owners manual I think it shows the location also.
NNO is correct they are completely different #s my assembly no. is 25113, car # is ...108155

oh and Jay get a heater! Would ya let your kids be out in that temp without tryin' to keep them warm? hahaha

NNO, My 355 is a challenge car, it did not have that ID plate on the door pilar but looking at other 355s with serial nos. that were will close numerically to mine it would have built in Feb. 1997 actually saw no.108165(10 digits from mine) Regards, Vern

... I am so proud of you......... ;) :D

The engine number is buried under some wires and vacuum hoses at 1:30 clock position and about 2" away from the oil filter :).

Can you give us a little visual direction...? I wouldn't know an oil filter from a coffee filter.

Thanks, next time I find myself peering into the engine bay of a 355, I'll remember that.
