I was at the workshop the other day and the head mechanic said I should think about upgrading my car to one with lower kilometers. My car has done 55000kms or about 32000miles and he seems to think the engine may need some work soon. What do you all think? It runs really well and doesn't seem to have any obvious problems.
Are there any F-chatters out there with high mile 355's who have or have not had engine rebuilds.

Could you please let me know your milage and wether or not your engine has or hasn't had major work! Valve guides, cam-belts, exhaust not included. I think they have been covered well as reported problems.

    Thanks, just want some stats!

Are the conclusions of this mechanic based on any gathered evidence?

There is no direct correlation between high mileage (~32,000 in this case) and engine failure.

Have a leak-down test performed on your engine. This test will tell you the status of EACH of the 8 cylinders. It will give you a good overall assessment of the health of your engine. Less than 10% leakage in each cylinder means you're in great shape.

I would suggest that you have an outside party perform this operation. This will ensure that there is no bias.

I wonder What internal signs of engine wear the mechanic found, unless a engine is stripped and the crank, rods, and sheels ect isnt the only way of checking an engines health by compresion checks or irregular engine noises. Becourse all said and done its still only an engine. Becourse its a ferrari engine it has no special parts in it that cant be found on other engines. All engines wear no matter what make they are. Realy p*sses me of when ferrari cant make a good strong reliable engine like Porsche,Mercedes, chevy, nissan for christ sake ect, take Porsche for instance, if you buy one with ony 30,000 miles on it,the buyer asks why has it not been driven?? I had a nissan 300ZX that had 140,000 miles on it, 50,000 i put on without any problems what so ever just the usual belt change when i had it. Even my ex Diablo had nearly 80,000 miles on it when i sold it, and checking all the comprehensive history it never had engne failure.Should it not be that if an engine is regularly maintained with clean oil/fluids it should last like any other engine? I have seen how an engine is serviced and its no great ferrari mystery.

Or maybe Ferrari engines are good strong and reliable, but maybe we believe the bullsh*t.

I don't think the guy was basing his claims on anything in particular.
In Hong Kong the cars arn't driven that much so to see a Ferrari with more than 50000kms is quite rare.
Mind you they have been trying to talk me into a 360.

The car runs very well, with no signs of any engine problems at all. I have the car serviced and oil changed every 5000kms, and fix anything that needs doing in between.

Thats why I thought I'd ask here to see what the general consensus was with 355 engines.

I am appoaching 50K miles of my 95 F355 Spider (Had some initial problems with emmision control items - See my post in General Discussion today - Sold a F355 spider with no cats - Dealer pulled a fast one). Besides both headers being replaced at approx. 40K and the clutch at 30K with the major service.
The car appears to have had only routine services.

BTW: The car was driven coast to coast in the USA right after the 30K service.

I'm not aware of any F car that needs bottom end work based on miles. Most of the Daytonas, C4s and preinjection V12s I've ever seen have never been opened up. Those earlier cars will more often have gone through a top end rebuild at some point. That was true of all cars of that era. You did valves etc as part of the maintenance of a car. More modern 8s and 12s (308 and beyond --dinos too so far as I know) run forever. There's a guy in Dallas with 160,000 plus miles on a 328 that just keeps going. Mine is almost to 90k and has never been opened w/o any signs of any loss of compression, oil pressure, burning or leaking oil or anything else. If a doctor told you to have open heart surgery because you were 50 and he needed to make a boat payment, would you?

Jam, the mechanic is full of crap. My 348 has over 60,000 miles on it, which would be well over 100,000 kilometers. Unless the engine breaks don't worry about it. Just maintain it properly and it will last a long time.

100.000 km should be the minimum for a properly used 355 engine.
Even if oil consumption gets higher it' not always a reason for a rebuild.

BTW: I'm able to destroy a 911 engine in 1.000 km by just driving it badly :)
    (but I didn't)

My friend has driven the hell out of his 78 308 and it was still running (albeit a little down on power) when he started a body off restoration last year. He drove that baby so hard and even in some slushy weather in November. It had almost 100,000 miles on it when he started the work last year. I was surprised that it could take such a beating as he drove it to the limit every day and it was his only summer car for a few years. I have come to beleive that we baby our F cars too much mostly because of the costs of repairs. These cars can take a licking and keep on ticking.

My 95 F355 had the cylinder liners and piston rings replaced at ~20k miles. Valve guides were addressed as well. It's an early 95 with a sept. 94 build date. Supposedly the early 95's had some issues with either the liners or the rings wearing prematurely.

The previous owner who lives in California had the work done (lucky for me as the bill as about 30g). The work was done by the Auto Gallery.
