355 Exhaust manifold HPC coating

    I have searched this site to see how others have got on with HPC coating the exhaust manifolds.

    I have had the usual blown exhaust headers and had them rebuild by a friend who makes racing motorcycle exhausts for a living.
    What I am asking is for comments on how I intend to run my car in future.
    1. Have the manifolds HPC coated to a 1400 degree spec
    2. Put the top half of the heat shields back on to keep the standard look.

    Its being done Auckland to a 1400 degree spec. When I get them back and pay the bill I will tell you who is doing it.
    They have to be blasted first and coated inside and out.
    One disadvantage is if it needs a further repair it cant be welded over and needs to be blasted (sand or bead, not sure), that's why I'm paying twice the $ figure to go from 700 to 1400 degrees so hopefully they will last.

    I am putting the top half of the heat shields on so it looks like it left the factory.
    I have had extra fixings put on the manifold to hold the shield securely and stop any resonance.

    The heat shield box without fiberglass inside it is must hold the heat in incredibly.

    I figure with HPC coating it will reduce under hood temp a huge amount.

    The guy who did the manifold repairs is really great and MILES cheaper than other prices paid in NZ>

    You are going to have flaking problems with a header coating that only withstands 1400F

    Although you're in New Zealand, so it's quite a distance, many people on this Forum seem to be quite interested in Swain Tech Coatings - highly heat resistant and very resilient.

    I am also curious why you are only mounting the upper-half of the OEM heat shield. I, personally, would consider coating the headers and then replacing the entire heat shields with the addition of new (or even better) insulation. Yes, it's a dual-edged sword - as the internal heat within the shielded header unit will shorten the life-span of the header, but will greatly reduce underhood temperatures which, themselves, cause a plethora of problems (e.g., destruction of the OEM electrical cables and connectors, alternator malfunction, etc.).

    Here is my .02c

    I would DEFINATLY replace the factory heat shields, both top and bottom, regardless of what coating you put on the header, reduction of heat in the engine bay is top priority. You also need to protect the surrounding equipment from any potential heat damage, engine mounts, CV boots, Alternator, a bunch of wires and plugs etc. I would also pack the heat shields.

    Not sure I would have the HPC treatment inside the pipes, if the coating fails the consequences could be horrendous:eek:.....I am not totally up to speed on the HPC process but can they just coast the outside of the headers?? Sucking back HPC coating into your cylinders is not going to look pretty.
