The 355 F1 spider and I just arrived home on the back of a low loader. Shame its a really nice sunny day here in the UK and it was my first opportunity to drop the top but alas a gear selection problem put a stop to that.

As I approached a set of traffick lights the car would not down shift from 4th. I eventually pulled up and the clutch disengaged. After several attempts to down shift and set the car in first gear, the car automatically selected neutral. The gear box warning light was on and stayed on flashing away happily.

Its obviously a dealer job but could anyone offer an opinion as to the likely causes so I can be better informed when discussing it with the dealer. There's no fluid from the back of the car, so no burst pipes, and the actuator was replaced about 2 months ago.

    Thanks for any advice

    Tom

Check to make sure both doors are fully shut. Check to make sure the engine lid is fully shut. Check to be sure your brake pedal switch is working. These are some quick checks you can do at home.

After all that has been looked at, sit in the car with all doors closed. Turn the key to the on position and watch the gearbox light flash. You should hear the pump running to prime the system. Just before the pump stops running the light should go out. If it does go for a quick drive and chek the function. Also check you fluid level.

I suspect the actuator was never properly centered and it has finally shown itself.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. Got it back from the dealers last weekend. It tuned out to be a poor connection/plug onto the pump assembly. A valuable lesson for a newbie - check the electrics!
