I think I am having problems with my fan motors. I bought my 99 355F1 Spider in the winter so I have not had issue with this is the colder months. When I sit in traffic, my temp gauge goes up quickly. It will go just under over heating in about 5 minutes. It's never over heated though. The manual says the fans are supposed to kick in at 190, but I don't hear anything. My buddies Testarossa is very audible and cools down rapidly, well under 190. Mine stays around 225 in stop and go traffic and the AC turns off, which really sucks in Texas. When I am moving, it goes back to around 165-175. Any thoughts? Anyone else have this problem?

when the fans run on my 355 you can hear them. The left hand comes on first & if it's really hot the right hand comes on too. The fan on LHS is 2' from your left ear, you can't miss it when it's running.

There is no mistaking when they are on - check the fuses they could have blown them if neither is kicking on.

Check you fuses first as suggested and also check to see the they are seazed. It's not a common thing to happend but I have had to replace them before.

Well, I have a couple stupid questions. Where are the fuses? I have never had to check them and I could not find them. My second stupid question. How do I jump start my car? It is dead. It's been sitting for a couple of weeks in the hot garage. I think the battery is under the right front wheel. Correct? I guess I have to take it off to get to it? This sucks.

The fuses are in the passenger side footwell, under the rubber foot pad. The metal cover folds down. Take a look and I'm sure you'll figure it out.

To jump the car, you don't need to mess with the battery compartment. Rather, open the engine bonnet and remove the black metal "electricals" cover on the right side. That metal cover should have some data plate stickers on it, there's an identical metal cover on the left side. There should be three screws which you'll have to remove and the cover just slides out, pretty simple. You will see a plastic box with a " + " sign. Pop that open and there's your positive pole. The ground is a nut that sticks out slightly to the left of the box. The only thing is that after you've charged your battery, or jumped the car, you will need to run the car to "re-acquire the engine control parameters" (from manual). Run the car for ten minutes at idle with all electricals and a/c system switched off. This will allow the ECU's to re-learn their operating parameters. Good luck!

[edit: This is the cover I speak of...]

I am having the same problem and have for the last year. My left side fan will turn on late--210 instead of 190 and only stay on for a few seconds. The right side is controlled by the oil temp and the ecu and works fine. I have changed the fan sensor, and relays with no help. I am wondering if the fan is controlled by the AC computer besides the sensor? Does the water temp sensors that are in the manifold run to these sensors? The wiring diagram is very vague. It seems no one knows how to fix this problem.

I have a fan motor out on my 355. Does anyone have any cross references to avoid buying the outrageously priced Ferrari part? Thanks.

It's opposite I believe, at least for me. Right on first, left on at 190.

The left fan is controlled by the sensor in the left radiator, the right one is controlled by the sensor in the water manifold in the engine valley, not the oil temp. Right one is turned on much lower, like 80 degrees or something. Left one is 190. Have you pulled and inspected your fan? The fans frequently go bad where the fan is connected to the motor. Mine actually just came off and wouldn't spin at all.

Also, may be possible you have air bubbles in your system. Make sure your coolant system was bled properly with the bleeder screw on the thermostat housing if anything was done recently. Also, the two small ~1/4" coolant lines that come from the front of the coolant reservoir are bleeder hoses and often will swell, deteriorate and plug up. You may want to pull and check these. If they are plugged they will not bleed properly. Both of mine were once and it's very common.

I am looking for this sensor in the water manifold that runs the right fan. Can you please be a bit more specific on how i can find it? My right fan is not coming on at all regardless of how hot the car gets. I've sent power directly to the right fan and it comes on and works fine. I've check the relays/fuses and they're all good. I'm thinking this sensor might be bad. I'm also not getting any check engine light.

Any ideas? Is the right fan sensor a sensible part to check on?

    Thanks

The passenger side fan is switched on ONLY by the Motronic. The driver side fan is switched on only by the thermostat.

True, and the right side gets the temperature information to the Motronic from the coolant sensor located to the right of the oil filter housing. It is show in this thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=159777&highlight=355+coolant+temp+sensor

BTW, I replaced my sensor without removing all the parts shown. Just removed and installed the new one...but lost a bit of coolant in the process. ;)
