What size (gallons) is a 1998 355? I need to put some fuel stablizer in this weekend and cannot locate my owners manual. Thanks.

so is that 21.7 + 5 gallon reserve = 26.7? Also what type of MPG does a 355 get? yes I know "depends how you drive" What about HWY milage etc?

    Thanks,

No, it's 21.7 gallons in TOTAL. The red reserve light goes on when there is about 5 gallons of fuel left. Sorry for any confusion.

I get about 16-17 MPG on the highway if I keep it around 75 MPH.

That's not bad. I get slightly less under city/highway driving, approx 15MPG. Under hard acceleration, 220-270 speeds, I'm getting just above 12MPG.

Another question: How many of you can verify that you can fill 10.8Gal when you fill from 1/2 to full? I can't seem to do that and she seems to be taking less fuel than the handbook figures. Even when the fuel low light comes on, I cannot seem to get anything close to 17 GAL into the tank.

So is there a problem with my fuel level sensor under-reading or what? Any suggestions other than running the tank dry (not a good idea to get air into the system), to find out?

    Ok here we go......

My gauge was on the last tick mark before empty.

    The car took 14.756 gallons.

    Hopefully it helps.

Thanks Jim and Reg. So it seems that the 355's tank is indeed a tad smaller than advertised.

Don't agree. Seems to me that all the posts are consistent with the fact that the fuel gauge system is designed to "exaggerate the state of near emptiness" to discourage us from our tendency to refuse to pull over to refill! Think it's the same for most cars, but having one quarter of the tank allocated as "reserve" in the case of the 355 (20 litres out of the 82 litre total) makes it seem that the tank is smaller than specified.
Since running until the tank is dry is not a nice option, you could always dip the tank with a flexible plastic rod and correlate the readings with what's shown on the gauge.

Thanks. Problem with my country is that it is only 700sq km! The longest end is 42km so no prolonged interstate driving to get that sort of consumption figures.

Flip side of a small country, only 2 F355 spiders in town. Same number as Zondas!

    21mpg??? I am shocked!

I have never averaged better than 17mpg, even on looong interstate runs at a steady 65-70mph in the 35,000+ miles I put on my car. And this I know as a fact, because I top off my gas tank every time and calculate the miles/gallons used each and every time I fill up.

Worst gas mileage recorded was 10.2mpg over an entire tank, but I never took my car to the track.

When my '98 shows 1/8 tank remaining, and I fill it, it will take 15 gallons and change. The reserve evidently does not show up on the fuel gauge. So, even if the gauge shows empty, you'll still have 5 gallons with which to high tail it to a gas station?

Mine has always averaged over 20 mpg on the highway or interstate between 75-80mph. I thought that was normal for them.

I don't know how 20mpg is possible. I think I get about 10mpg or so. I do redline it on every gear though. 355 can't be driven any other way:)

I always got 21-22mpg on the highway, and I did a lot of highway miles. Typically in the 75-80mph range too with passing bursts a bit higher.

I was wondering about this. I don't think I have ever drive more than 5 - 10 mile max after the warning light comes on and I am filling in the 14.5 - 16 gallon range. I keep hearing that the reserve is 5 gal but I haven't had the balls to go another 50 - 70 miles with the warning light. I guess I have the smaller 1 - 2 gallon reserves from other cars in my head and the reserve, which is 25% of the total tank, does not show up on the gauge.
