They attributed a lot of the excess heat to downstream exhaust design compromises that wound up creating a volatile environment by the manifolds

I can verify under HPDE conditions that cat-bypass-pipes lower the oil and water temperatures by oil=10ºF (285ºF->275ºF) and water=7ºF (237ºF->230ºF). So, the cats do produce a lot of heat {{This is in a 1995 car without the challenge rear facia (drilled holes)}}
