355 Hydraulic Lifters

I remember seeing a thread Dave H posted showing a picture of the tappets and describing failure modes. I can't find it anywhere now. Does anyone have it? If not, I have my tappets in hand, am I supposed to be able to press down on the inside seat and feel it compress? I can't but could on a set a friend of mine has that he had rebuilt by DH. I can't find one of mine that compresses in the least, I would ask him but he's busy.

So how can I tell if mine are bad? I can't compress any of the inside seat toward the top of the tappet with my thumb, should I be able to?
