I've had my 355 for 7 years now, just got it back from its second major, and I'm looking to do some further work on the car that I've had in mind for quite a while now.

The goal is rather lofty, but I'd ideally like to make a 355 as the factory would have had there been no emissions concerns at the time. The plan is a completely new exhaust system (make TBD) including new headers, proper heat shielding, deleting the Y-pipe, bypass valve, cats, and o2 sensors.

The main point of this post is that I want to do this the right way, with before and after dyno runs, have the ECU specifically tuned for the modifications, and since my car is a 99 / 5.2, have the ECU modified to ignore the lack of cats, o2 sensors, etc.

Any suggestions on a qualified shop to handle a project like this, namely the ECU tuning? I don't mind driving quite a ways, or even shipping the car really, just interested in the best result.

From searching around, Competizione in MD seems like a potential candidate, any other thoughts?

It seems to me, having been there and done that, that this is the sort of thing you ask before you do the major as it's much more cost effective to do it all at the same time. Is there any reason you're doing it after?

The O2 sensors are a critical part of fuel mixture management. Thru them, the ECU is able to adjust the air/fuel ratio to optimal, smog or no smog. I would encourage you to keep them in the system as they provide no penalty.

Competizione did a 355 with a full Gruppe M system a few years ago.. headers/exhaust/bypass/intake/etc. It looked and sounded fantastic. They can also do some ECU tuning so you might want to ask them about it.

Competizione took care of my car the five years we had it on the East Coast and they are simply the best. Highly recommended and I think you'll find plenty of fans for them in the area.

You're correct, but I wanted the major done at FoNE, in the winter, and a) dealers in my experience don't like bypassing emissions, b) I've been out of the country for five months, and for this project I definitely want to be a shop rat and actively involved in person.

I followed that thread, very nicely done. The metacafe link isn't working for me, any updates on the additional heat shielding you mentioned or any new youtube videos?

I'll keep that in mind, thank you, and we'll hopefully figure out if either the pre-cat or post-cat o2 sensors are worthwhile in the 5.2 system.

I saw that, very cool setup, though I'm not entirely sold on header wrap being enough for shielding. I definitely plan on following up with Competizione this week.

    Will do, thank you.

Any other solid shops with ECU modification capabilities people can vouch for?

You really want to keep the O2 sensors, they form the feedback loop so the engine does not run either too rich or too lean, and they do not harm power production. Heck, even F1 engines use these things.

In addition to a monster new 'header/cat back' 5.2 Twin-Bypass currently in progress, I have been working on a new design of that 'bypass delete' system for some time now. It would be from heads to tips and have custom header sheilding.

An uncatted extreme version of this new 'bypass delete system' would have the peak 30+ RWHP gains of an all out 'Twin-Bypass with 4-1 headers'. Yet maintain the 'simplicity and weight saving' of the 'bypass delete' design. A catted version would likely reduce the power to about 25+ RWHP. Still fantastic considering the exhaust gasses on a catted version would meet emissions specs.

I will look for that same Metacafe video, then try to load it to youtube.

    Awesome!
Can I still use that word even if it's 20+ years old?

Solid, any idea when the non-cat version of the new bypass delete setup will be available?
