355 Inner CV boot deterioration, swelling, deformation and cracking problem? .. Nope!

On average looks like about a 40 degree temp difference. Would seem significant. Thanks for the effort.

 

Yep. Look at the temperature range that the OEM shields put the CV boots under - purple line. No wonder your parts die.

Have you installed the shields on your 95? How did you get them in there? Pictures?

 

Ok, I finally got a change to log some temp data on my 95 with OEM shields which are covered with sheet aluminum cut to the same size and shape of the OEM shields. The first picture shows the mounting of the thermocouple on the underside of the shield. It was mounted with a small piece of wood (1/8" thick) which was supposed to act somewhat as a insulator between the shield and the TC. Thus was located on the back side of the shield near the bottom edge.

The second picture shows the shields as installed on my car. Note that the back part of the shield is almost directly under the Y pipe.

Third figure shows the temperature data from start up, driving, stopping for gas, driving, stopping for lunch, driving home and cool down in the garage. Pretty much self explanatory. Time is in minutes from start up.

I hope to do another extended test with the TC mounted differently to better isolate it from contact with the shield.

The location of your sensor is at the high point under the stock shields. Your greatest heat entry is not from there, but the cats to the rear. Heat rising, the sensor is going to be affected as indicated. But your CV boots are still cooking, mostly from heat intrusion from the cats, we believe. You definitely need a set of goth's shields, dude.

 

Dude, the sensor is located about 1" above the lower edge of the back flap of the OEM shield, on the inside. It's a 95, so is also directly under the Y pipe. Don't be confused by where the lead wire comes out.

Anyone actually buy the Goth shields and put them on yet? Pictures?

 

I installed them 2 weeks ago as part of a inner boot change on the passenger side. They fit and look great. I'll try and take some pics and post.

 

Sorry, I was referring to installing them on a '95. And how you got them in there on a '95.
