Hey guys, hope there is someone out there that can help me on this one. Just ordered/received my "Elmscan 5-Bluetooth" from Scantool. Hooked it up to my 96 355gts and despite going through the tool set up 3 times now, I keep getting "unable to detect protocol..." then tells me to make sure that the key is in postion after the "accessories" position but with the car off (which it is....all 3 times). I have followed the directions to the letter, double checked the obdII connection, ininstalled/re-installed bluetooth unit...still the same problem. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I would love to find out that it is some really brainless oversight on my part and easily remedied. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

You should have bought the the DashDyno (http://www.auterraweb.com/dashdyno.html). A much better, user friendly, OBDII engine diagnostic/performance monitor.

My cheap hand held OBDII scanner gave me the same error message until I figured out the key has to be on(car not started) and the alarm off. If I tried to get a reading with the alarm on, I would get the code. Hope this helps.

I've noticed this as well with the ST05, what needs to happen is that the alarm is cycled off before every turn of the key or it wont communicate with reader.

OK, dumb question-Re: "you have to turn off the alarm":
How do I turn off the alarm? I assume you mean something other than just hitting the button on the key fob (presumably, it is 'off' when I unlock it to get into the car if that was the case). Thanks so much for the fast replies to my cry for help. I love how this site is so full of people willing to help.

    Two suggestions:

    1) Make sure you have had the ground recall/campaign peformed on your OBDII plug, which adds an additional (missing) ground to position #4 as outlined in the attached document. If it is missing, you can either fix it yourself, or take it to the dealer for a free repair.

    2) I believe you need the engine running to use the tool. I know that is the case when scanning with a regular OBDII scan tool.
