whistling sound that goes up in pitch with the revs of the engine?

My car's been doing this since I bought it. Just curious what it is - a vacuum leak? A normal sound??

Yes If it is the same noise I think you are talking about it is normal. It occasionally occurs when you are accelerating quickly or steadily you get that characteristic F-sound and occasionally in there you get that high pitch sound which I think has something to do with a value on the exhaust side. There are a few F-mechanics that post here and hopefully one of them will pick up this thread and can explain.

Totally have no real clue but my BMW 3 series does this and its a common BMW problem. In the Bimmer there is a boot on the air intake that ends up sucking some air... Since there is a LOT of air suckage on the 355 it is possible that there is a similar issue... a small leak sucking air... check hose clamps, boots, etc. off the air boxes for small leaks.

I had that issue in my Porsche, and it turned out to be interference with my radio. The sound was actually coming out of the speakers as the engine rpm's go higher. Fixed the radio wiring and the sound was gone.

They usually have noise suppressors/condensors on the alternator to stop that noise coming through your speakers. Maybe thats what is wrong here with this 355. :)

If you're talking about the sound of the bypass valve opening up, that's not the sound. It's more of a whistling sound.

Just came back from an evening drive (wife wants to know why I have to take the car out two times today...!!)

No, I do not get a whistling sound. I have a tubi. There is a pronounced whistle out of my friends 328 that I believe is intake noise. I have a video from VIR with both cars, and you can hear his for certain. No such noise out of my car at all.
