Well it wasn't a Merry X Mas for my 355 today, took it for a nice spin through Death Valley yesterday and I had a rattle comming from my pass side which I believe was my mirror.

I took the cover plate off under the mirror and then you'll see the adjustment nut in 22mm to tighten the mirror as it was a bit loose, I tightened it down a bit then checked to see if the mirror would still rotate and the threaded stud in the mirror mechanism broke with the nut still on it.

Does anyone know if you can purchase just the metal guts of the mirror or am I stuck paying $1000 for a new one?It appears the 348 guts are similar as well, I'd rather not buy a new mirror of course as I would need to paint it as well. A repair of the threaded piece welding it looks difficult as it seems to be cheap pot metal

The ironic part was there is a self tapping screw that goes into this metal base into the painted mirror cover that fell out which was the problem in the first place not so much the mirror was that loose on its base. I'll put in in the expensive mistakes file.

What?! You thought that you were going to have to purchase a $1,000 NOS mirror?!

Nope. Just a $6 banjo bolt. That and some drilling and you've got yourself a *better* than stock mirror mount for a 99.4% discount on parts, plus a 100% discount on dealer labor.

Improve the car. Reduce expenses and downtime/shoptime. Your breakfast tomorrow will cost more and take more time to finish.

Yeah, I thought of finding a used mirror and taking the inner pieces out but this will work better of course :)

Thanks (takes a bow). Terry did it, though (I just reposted it).

But my wife said the same thing to me this morning after I assembled a dozen toys for our 4 and 1 year olds last night!

Right. The used route saves a few bucks (what, $800 instead of $1,000 or so?!), but then you are stuck with the same crappy material making the mount connection (i.e. will probably fail again, especially since the part is *used*).

You are right as the mirror attachment is a cheap pot metal, I tightened the adjustment nut enough so the mirror no longer had much play and turned the mirror to check it and was suprised how easily it snapped off with little force.
